Based Taro is still writing the script, Platinum are just doing the gameplay.
You can stay salty over it inevitably being the best ARPG in years though.

I really.hope this game is good. Last couple platinum games have been pretty weak, but hopefully they have a proper production budget/schedule this time.

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective. Even if it's just Revengeance-lite like what it looks like so far, it's already leagues ahead of any of the DoD/Nier games in terms of combat.
I'm not hoping for a revived Platinum game, I'm looking for a Taro game with decent combat for once. Which really isn't much of a hurdle.

I got it for 15 burgerdollars, pretty satisfied. If you're a fan of Zelda Ocarina of Time it has a similar vibe. Combat isn't deep, but fun especially in boss fights.

>Last couple platinum games have been pretty weak

The last 3 were:
TMNT (piss-awful)
SF0 (good but Nintendo gimmicked it to death)
Transformers Devastation (fucking amazing)

The real issue is Takahisa Taura is an unknown here; this is his first directorial project with Plat. Like if Kenji Saito did it, we would know what to expect; I don't know what to expect of Taura
>>
>>343205691
Fucking hype. Pretty much the only thing worth noting at E3, but it was totally worth it.
>>
>>343207670
>use TMNT/transformers as examples

Glad you didn't use Korra too, those games were low budget licensed titles.
>>

>every time you play through the game to improve your mission ranks, the story gets a little more bizarre
>by the end it's a clusterfuck but you keep going because you're wondering how many fucking NG+++++ iterations they accounted for
>by NG+63 the game has devolved into a black and white NES-sprite sidescroller shmup game and it turns out the robots aren't really robots, except they ARE really robots, except actually they AREN'T really robots, and they're dead, only they're alive, only really they are dead, only they're robots
What's not to look forward to? I think a short, highly replayable game by Taro would be fascinating. Hand the man Bayonetta and a pen and he'll write you The Stanley Parable with punching and pedophiles
>>
>>343207416
And Nier doesn't play shit like Revengeance.

It LOOKS like Revengeance but all the gameplay footage screams Bayonetta / Transformers.
>>
>>343208298

It looks like NieR with platinum flair on the animations.
>>
>>343208298
Either way, it doesn't change the fact that it'll play better than anything in the series to date, which is a huge plus regardless.
>>
>>343207829
Transformers was a fucking masterpiece. Platinum's best core gameplay system to date, and the world was clearly a labor of fanwank-love by die hard TF fans (and that's coming from someone who was never into Transformers).

The game's only flaws were
>too short
>no playable Decepticons (I guess if you care)
>one or two pretty serious Kilgore-exploit-tier glitches that enabled you to cheese through Prime difficulty if you were a scrub

>>
>>343208471
Actually, Nier and Bayonetta were far closer, gameplay-wise, than most people seem to realize, which is part of the reason the Taro + Plat matchup made so much sense

>multiple weapon types
>a solid, mashable combat system with an emphasis on special tech
>high focus on speed, evasion, reaction time
>frequent genre-bending
>some light shooter elements

TMNT was just "Bayo, but also some TPS stuff" which is exactly what Nier looks like as well.
>>
>>343208767
Hell if Nier had a heavy attack that could be mixed into combos it would pretty much have been a Platnum game in its entirety.
>>
>>343208767
>TMNT was just "Bayo, but also some TPS stuff"
Sorry, meant to say TFD

TMNT was an irredeemable abortion
>>
>>343209141
Well, the combos were far simpler; no branches, no launchers/air game, and no dial-focus (the damage and knockback/utility gets larger as you near the end of the combo/hit the finisher, and the challenge is executing a combo string fully without interruption, and there are tools like dodge offset to make that a game of skill)

The core combat concept of a Platinum game is "react to enemy attacks with good defensive timing until you see an opening, then blow that opening apart and keep the enemy stunned as long as possible". Nier got the first part but it never had the turn, where you squeezed your hit in and got a stunlock, and the game became about manipulating the combat system to keep the enemy stunned as long as possible.
>>
>>343208545
>makes the final boss unbeatable
>>
>>343201734
Fuck off, Nier and DoD had some great fucking combat. I don't understand where this meme that they don't have good combat comes from. God damn shitposters.
>>
>>343209549
They had God of War tier combat.

If you think God of War had great combat, well, that's your own personal hang-up.

The combat wasn't SHIT, which seems to be the meme about town these days, but Nier's combat was an entry-level Musou game, nothing "good". Just a passable interface between mashing attack and enemies dying.
>>
Is this Wrong Information: The Thread?
>>
>>343209549
Don't fucking lie. The combat in DoD isn't irredeemably terrible, but don't act like Platinum taking over won't be a huge improvement.
Drakengard 3 was the least offensive and even then it still felt like they tried to make a half-way decent proper action game out of the shitty musou-clone engine they'd used before. It's clunky as all shit.

>>343209712
>They had God of War tier combat.
No. I'm not one to defend GoW combat, but fucking come on man. GoW from II onwards actually had something going for it.
>>
>>343202298
make sure you do new game+ or you'll miss out on a lot. You only have to repeat the 2nd half and it adds in new story details.
>>
>>343209712
>>343209549
>Just a passable interface between mashing attack and enemies dying.

That sure sounds like shit to me. There's a reason why no one cares about the gameplay of Nier or DoD and instead hypes up the story. And every thread, someone always brings up how bad the gameplay is. It's an issue with the game and people deceiving other to think that it's acceptable are also lying to themselves.
>>
>>343208767
>>343209141
The magic finisher cutscenes when you killed bosses were basically Bayonetta's summons without the button mashing for points, and there was only about six months between their releases. Fun little coincidence.
>>
>>343210119
>GoW from II onwards actually had something going for it.
So did Nier.

The dodge focus was well-executed (air rolls ftw), the spell system was diverse and well-executed (recharging "stamina" MP was better than refillable "ammo" MP), the bullet hell elements were fresh as fuck and integrated well with the speed.

The game was fast, the game was responsive.

It was just mashy.

Alright, Nier had some stuff. But it wasn't in the same ballpark as GoW II or III. Those aren't amazing games, but they did have combat that Nier doesn't touch. That's all I'm saying.
>>
>>343210306
>the spell system was diverse and well-executed

Because being limited to two spells was great

>the bullet hell elements were fresh as fuck and integrated well with the speed.

It was barely a bullet hell, all you had to do was run away . There was barely any dodge aspect to it since you can flee in midair.
>>
>>343208136
For a newcomer to the series, you're selling Taro as the M. Night Shyamalan of vidya.
>>
>>343211393

>limited to 2 spells

>>
>>343211393
>Because being limited to two spells was great
Fairy Bloom Freesia only gave you 3 special attacks and it was extremely highly regarded for its combat system. It's an RPG, how you build for fights is important.

>It was barely a bullet hell, all you had to do was run away . There was barely any dodge aspect to it since you can flee in midair.
Exactly. That felt "easy" because the game was responsive. The game shouldn't be challenging solely because getting your character to do what you want was difficult.

The bullet hell stuff was very well-put-together, IMO, especially for a game with 3-dimensional movement. Doing something like that with the Z-Axis included is not easy to execute, and I thought Cavia managed to capture the essence of "deadly spirograph art" in a way that didn't obscure visibility too much but still forced you to make your movements very calculated.

I think he gets by just being a likable weirdo.

Like some kind of office doggie that barks out bizarre plot/gameplay ideas but instead of doggie treats sometimes they'll let him make a game.
>>
>>343212775
He's somewhat infamous for having a story that changes on each subsequent playthrough.

Most games with multiple endings have choices that lead to different outcomes; his stories just drift from NG+ to NG+ through multiple iterations, slowly revealing more of the world in a way that makes you reevaluate what you've seen before.

Remember how in THUG, the second time you beat it, instead of the final boss showdown against Eric Sparrow, you punched him in the fucking face?

It's like that, except after punching him in the face you learn he stole your trick footage because he needed it to prevent the apocalypse.

And then on the third playthrough you redeem yourself and prevent the apocalypse by missing the trick and landing on the helicopter blades when you jump it.

He is a little Shyamalan-y, I guess. A true fan of stories that change completely when you view them with one additional piece of omitted information.

You'll have to get all the weapons, you don't have to do all the quests. I suggest getting the ruined map quest as early as you can during part 2 of the game. Lots of running around the map for that quest and it gets you one of the weapons.
