Leveling up crops is easily the most retarded thing Harvest Moon and Rune Factory did. It's like they absolutely needed to add pointless "RPG elements" (just number padding actually), but also had to streamline them as hard as possible. So you just grind the number over and over until you eventually have max level seeds, which grow into max level crops, which are only different from level 1 in a fraction selling price.

What about them? Most of the characters are designed to be Western European or American, and speak appropriately. The only characters that are particularly Asian are the few that are actually designed to be Asian, like the blacksmith. Having her in a sea of Anglosphere archetypes doesn't make the game very weeb.

Something that I dislike in current Harvest Moon games is that there's no more a three year limit. You're not tested anymore at your job of raising your farm.
Since there's no end in sight, there's hardly any incentive to keep playing. Add to that how they make crops and shit unlock on things as late as year 5, I don't really get any drive to keep playing them.
Three years in the older games was pretty cool and you kept playing because there was an ending in sight to see. I'm not saying that games shouldn't be infinite, but leave that to after you "beat" them.

Story doesn't move until you willingly progress it. Its not Harvest Moon, you can't get stuck. You can spend the first hundred years farming and it doesn't matter.

RF4 is slightly better for this simply because of how much extra content they've tacked on. Unless you've had really shit luck with the random events, you will probably be married before you complete all the story content.
For all it's problems, I really like RF4. Less waifus, but they have a equal number of husbands and every character has a lot more dialogue so you see them interacting a fair bit.

Personally I preferred RF3, but I agree. The combat is better, the farming and mining is better and less tedious, the characters are arguably better...
I think the only thing Stardew has over Rune Factory might be the fishing, but even then I feel like it's not as comfy and easy going.
