We have Win10 at work right now. "Pro" version, but after digging in settings, I managed to disable nearly all connections to MS services. Should be like that by default, tho, but I guess that nobody would set up full telemetry that way.
I dont really trust the workaround with registry editing for the very telemetry component, as MS admit that Group Policy settings overwrite registry settings, means that even if you place that dword, if your Group Policy have it set as 1, it stays as 1. 0 officially only for Enterprise/Edu.
That being said, I have copy of Edu and Im about to get new PC in month or something. Probably will have to install this Edu version of Win 10 (fancy named Enterprise, in fact) instead of reinstalling my copy of 7.
Following MS own articles, you can really disable all connections other than machine/OS ID and occasional pings of search function.
Again, should be like that right out of box.

I just wanted to add a quick addendum to that shit; only time you should not do a fresh install is if you for some reason don't have a smartphone or a flashdrive or something similar you can store important files on, or if you live in a place where you can't have unlimited internet, those are the only two acceptable answers for not doing a fresh install.
