Either way gen 3 has the worst NPCs. The gym leaders, rival, Elite Four and Champion are all uninteresting and mostly forgettable.

one thing I really miss from gen 1 is how not everyone wanted to be your friend. The gym leaders weren't always hard-asses but they were there to challenge you first and foremost. Gary is just kind of a prick the whole game. Things like that.
