Final Fantasy was a niche series mostly loved by Japan until FFVII. And it wasn't the focus on story that made FFVII popular. It was the largest marketing budget for a game in history up to that point. The game could have been the story from FFVIII and people would have still bought it in record numbers because of FMV hype and commercials.

That's exactly what they did do. And was one of the reasons Enix had to bail them out. The Spirits Within movie wasn't the only reason they had financial problems. Another major issue was them spending way too much money making expensive games that required long term consistent marketing to keep the hype going, but sold less copies than FFVII.

DQ will never be as big as FF is in the west, it has nothing to do with marketting at this point. FF hit big in the 90s with FF7 because it came out at the right time at the right place right on the turn from cartridge to disc based media, from 2D to 3D, the marketing helped it then BECAUSE it was an untapped market. Same reason why Pokemon did well because untapped market at the time in the 90s.

Funny. I was just about to say the same thing about your post. A lot of the reasons you listed for FFVII doing so well were helped or even trumped by the marketing. People didn't rush to play FFVII because it was on a disk based medium. The loading times was one of the few deterrents of the game. And FF was hardly the first season to be on a Disk or to go 3D.
People bought FFVII because of the unprecedented levels of marketing. Which all those commercials just showed off FMVs and not actual gameplay. People were buying into the hype of a game that looked like a movie. Which was perpetuated entirely by marketing.
