Difficulty has poor scaling. Trash mobs are trash but the bosses can be huge difficulty spikes. So judging an upcoming boss fight based on what you've been fighting so far doesn't work. Overleveling generally fixes everything. Oh and by the way there are moments where the game will lock you out of going back to level. So you'll be stuck in a shitty situation with no way to get stronger to overcome it. So might want to make more than one save.

I'm happy /v/ is hating on Star Ocean V. With all that negativity here and similar sites sales will slump, which will force a early price reduction.
Besides, from what I've heard Star Ocean V takes about the same amount of time to complete and has a similar level of content (in-game & post-game) as Star Ocean I & II, which were my two favorite of the series as III & IV got to be just too fucking long.
I enjoy JRPG's that take 20-40 hours to complete depending on how much of a completionist I'm being (before post-game if any), not over fucking 100 hours before I even get to the post-game.

Neptunia fans will like whatever CH dumps out so there's no point in arguing with them. Like I said so far the combat is fun and it seems like theres quite a bit of side quest and exploring to do. Things might change as I get farther but so far so good. Its not anything AMAZING but it's what I expected it to be and a little more. So I'm satisfied. The latter will always bug me about the Zodiac Job system. The first time I played the vanilla game, I did have each character play a role. Second time playing I broke the shit out of the game, it was awesome. Now when I play, I place very hard restrictions on my characters.
So the fact they said "no, u pray how we want u to pray" kind of bugs me. I like the job system, but it wasn't perfectly implemented, the game was made for vanilla. I hope the adjust some shit in the ps4 version. I would really love for the ability to switch jobs, or better the ability to link 2 jobs together, with the second job only getting half the effectiveness. That would be fucking rad.

Yes, the ZJS is the International Job version that JP got. It's basically going to be that, with some minor upgrades. So I'm personally hoping for some changes to the job system. Star Ocean 1 and 2 (Especially 2) are almost perfect games.
Star Ocean 3 isn't a bad game per se, but it tries to innovate in ways that didn't need innovation, and thus dilutes the overall experience (Running out of mana kills you for whatever reason, the bonus gauge focus, ramping up the weaboo shit like crazy, etc), but I did love the crafting system and certain improvements in the battle system.
Star Ocean 4 is an abomination that I would honestly choose to remove from this planet over EA or Activision.
Not really hopeful for 5 from what I've seen of it.

I said almost perfect. Star Ocean 1, in terms of the era it came out in, was about as good as RPGs could get. People talk as if FF4/6 were the best SNES RPGs, but they probably didn't grow up in Japan, or didn't get to play it translated (Waited so many years for it to work properly on an emulator). When it really got amazing for me was the remake, since it was done with a modified SO2 engine. The only thing I disliked about it really was the whole bit where you needed to get the tomes or whatever they were to get certain moves, and depending on which characters you recruited you could be locked out of different moves.
I haven't played 5, like I made obvious in my post, but I watched videos as they came out before release and the combat/characters don't really appeal to me. SO2 had the whole 90s anime character vibe going, and that's about as weaboo as I'm willing to go. Anything more obnoxious than that, and I can't really connect with the characters. SO3 didn't have this problem for me for the most part, aside from that extremely annoying little girl. SO4 was nauseating, and SO5's cast seems to have the same problem to a lesser degree.

Don't trst game reviews at all. They give every game AAA western studios shit out year after year perfect scores, they give indie trash like Gone Home and Undertale perfect scores, they gave FF13 good scores. Their opinion on video games is completely irrelevant. I'll wait for the game to be out a little while, wait for people who actually like video games to play it, see their consensus, then decide if its worth picking up.

I'm about three hours into the game right now.
It starts off really slowly and the walking/running animations are awkward, but the gameplay's been fun so far, especially after getting used to the guard/counter-attack system and using those tandem attacks. Not much else I can say for now, I have to play more.

The first town you go to where you meet the green haired mage chick, opposite direction of the main story quest objective is a building with 3-colored smoke coming out of it (you can see it from the inn entrance). Go in there to get the tutorial on side quests + synthesis skill. I literally just did this, I'm about an hour into the game.

Graphics are standard PS3 Japan quality. Nothing super flashy, but still eye pleasing. Kind of sad there's no physics objects in the world, and lack of character feet IK (making the bottoms of characters feet align with the angle of the ground or stairs they are on). Hair and cloth shaders look great though. Frame rate is good so far, but I'm also very early in the game and don't have 7 character on the screen casting high level spells. I'm really digging the seamless transitions in and out of battle and character dialogs. It really makes the loading screens between areas stick out like a sore thumb more, but they are atleast fairly short.

Anyone who played the game longer than a few hours will realize combat boils down to using hero actions to have your machine gunner jump over enemies to rack up damage and then having your pistol guy deal the killing blow on the next turn. Al that flashy shit like launching enemies is just running toward them and spamming shoot until they randomly go in the air. Slamming enemies into the ground is just jumping and shooting downwards on an airborne enemy. Tri-attacks are unlocked having your characters cross paths. The game is simple as fuck and it's a meme to say it's hard.

When does Star Ocean 2 get better? Playing the PSP version as the dude. I'm about to backtrack down to fight some dragon in a cave. The writing in the game makes me want to throw my PSP out the window, some of it is so fucking bad.

Why does each character only have one weapon model?
It's especially painful when you buy a weapon and it looks really cool in the artwork, yet you'll never actually see that cool ass weapon and your characters stick with the generic stock shit they started with.
