As far as free MMOs go, it's one of the better options out there.
Space combat is fun.
Ground combat can vary wildly between "kinda fun" and "this guy already has periods of invincibility he doesn't need that much fucking health who tested this shit".
Space Barbie is true endgame.
Also cash shop currency can be bought with in-game currency, though the exchange rate is at it's most fucked point in history right now. But it at least means you can grind for cash shop shit if you don't want to blow actual money on it.

I like it. It's a good time waster and you can cruise around in your ship finding random missions or doing story episodes.
I am also a sucker for the mini-missions you can send your crew on. I just like the thought of your massive ship having more than just your party doing shit.

Last time I played I only just reached the point where you upgrade to the first tier of ships and I got a Constitution class like the OSfag I am. It seemed like a lot changed since I last played at launch. Did they get rid of how you could explore uncharted space and get random missions out there?

It probably had more to do with Paramount not allowing them to use the ships in particular, since the story of the game carries on directly from the events of the first JJ movie and they even gave out the Red Matter as a cross-promotion console for ships.

Yes. No more beaming down to planets to find artifacts from the Third Borg Dynasty. They do want to bring exploration back at some point, but not in the half-assed form it was in before.
Patrolling known systems is still in though.

Yep. They sort of had to because they did away with the tiny sector blocks and now the whole game is in three very large ones (Alpha Quadrant with Cardassians et al, Beta Quadrand comprising most FED, KDF and ROM terrotiry and Delta Quadrant)
There was talk that at some point they'd come back, but haven't yet.
On the other hand you can send your old ships on missions now, in a system similar to doff missions.
