Pretty mediocre honestly, the only good games they've made recently are Xillia 1 and 2 and even then they're really rough when it comes to story. But the gameplay is good.

Been playing it today, It's painfully average so far. Areas are far too big for their own good since there's barely anything in them. Unskippable cutscenes is simply unforgivable in fucking 2016. Doubt many will want to replay this solely because of that. Also I fucking hate that you can only control Fidel outside of combat. It's jarring going into combat and having your perspective swapped at light speed if you had another character selected and the way it snaps back to Fidel after combat is annoying because it has to inform you that it happens every fucking time. Another problem being that sometimes you'll start battle with another character standing outside in the escape zone. This could have easily been avoided by allowing you to change who is at the head of the line. It's baffling why they made all these archaic as fuck design choices.
But god damn if Fiore's ass isn't the most amazing thing ever.

Oh I almost forgot. The saving is horrible. Save points are kind of sparse to the point you might start to get a little worried. Game also will lock save points and prevent from using them during certain segments for some stupid fucking reason. This is not a game you can play in short sessions. If you're going to play it you better have some free time.

There's only manual saving in the game. You're not going to see many save points in the field. They expect you to go through big areas with no saves. If you're exploring and fighting alot you're going to start to get nervous because there's no fucking save in sight. Your progress is always at risk. The game also completely locks you out of saving during some story segments (save points will turn red). I don't know why the fuck the game does this. I just know this is going to be annoying later.

It's not just the localizations, the designs went off the deep end after 3. Even in 3 they started to ruin the atmosphere of the first two games, which is a horrible idea when you want to run a lengthy number of games together.
Star Ocean 2 had arguably as bad of a localization (at least on the PSX) as 4, but the designs of the characters still looked believable and suited the plot and setting well. By the time SO4 came out I couldn't tell if I was looking at an outfit or a concept car.
