Sometimes I can't help but wonder if they send reviewers a different build of the game because we don't seem to be playing the same shit.
I've been playing SO5 and am enjoying it a lot. (and it's not as if I'm starved for JRPGs since I own and play a lot of well and lesser known games from the genre across all platforms)
Look at reviews for games like God Hand or Monster Hunter before it got popular to love it for example. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 compared to Freedom Unite scores like shit while they are mechanically extremely similar. God Hand is rightfully an almost memetical example of why reviewers sometimes seem to stick their heads up their ass while playing and review what they smell instead. Or they just need to get someone who can actually play games, a skill they often seem to lack. Besides just being biased, borderline moronic, pushing agendas etc.
TL;DR don't give a shit about what "professional" "critics" say because more often than not their opinions are different from yours or they just cannot score a game properly based on their merits and flaws alone

The game is good if you aren't judging it by some unfair standard. Sure, the game is lacking in some departments more than others. But can we really expect a rather small studio to produce the biggest and bestest product with amazing production values all around? Not really. Like the Atelier series (a favourite of mine) the JRPG genre has many games catered to a specific niche and if you come from outside that group you either hurl or come to love it. I love the Star Ocean games for what they are, good combat systems coupled with other great systems like the crafting and an absolutely horrendous shitshow of a story with hit or miss characters. If you like the JRPG genre, it's definitely something I recommend because it's FUN. If you usually don't play or like them, this is not your entry point and won't make you appreciate the things it has to offer.

Seriously a 6 for this is fair. The game was severely cut short. It has some minor problems with combat. I think it's a far better game in some respects to 4, and even 3.
Really we can hope this sells good enough, that Square gives Tri a good enough amount of money and time to make a full game next time.
I think some people will find it worth the full price, but for most they should probably wait for it to get a little cheaper.

It's bumpy on any remotely uneven surface , which is to say everywhere, and in battle there's constantly shit exploding in your face, which the camera does nothing to help with. You don't run into walls as often, but that problem still exists and is still resolved by moving away.

If you want a new Star Ocean, you want a new Star Ocean. The series hasn't been the best but you know if you want it, and it probably won't be great but you'll enjoy it.
There are a lot of series like this that get mediocre review scores (as they should with "professional" reviews), and it makes it important to keep perspective that a mediocre score doesn't mean the game is bad. It just means it has issues or doesn't appeal to everybody.

It got positive reviews because the edits don't affect gameplay or the core narrative and the gameplay is a good spin on traditional smt design. The only things you can seriously complain about are some clothes and the fact that it doesn't have an impenetrable and contradictory superficial look at gravure, and outside of the recreationally offended those aren't deal breakers.
