Which is the best Theif game? I bought the first one, and after forcing myself to play through 12 missions I could not bring myself to go any further. I bought Thief 2 in hopes that it would be better. While the first few missions were a bit of a drag, I quickly felt a huge increase in quality in contrast to Thief 1. Everything felt more developed and focused, in terms of both creative and technical aspects. Does anyone feel the same way?
>>
>>343104280
Thief is a classic, Thief 2 is widely regarded as superior, Thief 3 is...

Well, we don't talk about thief 3.

Except to say "still better than Thi4f"
>>
Thief 2 is excellent. Thief 1 is really fucking good. Thief 3 is trash aside from one level. Thief 4 is even bigger trash with no redeeming aspects.

If you didn't like Thief 1, I don't know if you'll enjoy Thief 2, but you bought it, you might as well try it out. I definitely think it's the best in the series.

With that said, literally all four of these games have terrible final levels. It's the Thief curse. No one knows how to have a proper climax in a stealth game.

About Thief Gold, didn't they change or add some levels in it? Can you get the original version anywhere?
>>
>>343104280
I lost my savefiles of thief 1 gold after reaching the most obvious plot twist in the history of gaming (played on max difficulty), i know i can easily regain lost progress by skipping all the levels i did with cheats but i havent had the time/urge to do so, overall from what i experienced the game really forces you to think which was the biggest plus for me, despite the maps and some of the objectives being really clusterfuck and the only real way not to spend 10 hrs on a level was to knock everyone out, i enjoyed the exploration and the adventure quite a bit, at some point i will finish it and the next 2 games also dont know how long will that take tho
>>

Thief 3's atmosphere alone is worth the playthrough. But even then, Robbing the Cradle might be the best Thief mission in existence, so yeah, it's worth it.

Gold has a few poor levels, the majority of the game after Blackmail of thief II is boring

>Thief Gold > Thief II

This was one of my beefs with Thief Gold, there was barely a story! It was only after the first 7 missions that a plot appears, the plot being that you start doing groceries for Constantine . Where as in Thief 2, you get to unravel Karras' conspiracy, each mission giving you another piece to the puzzle.
>>
PLEASE BE WARNED...
>>
The Dark Project is a masterpiece, Thief 2 is just very very good.
>>
How are you supposed to play these games with regard to saving?

Beat the mission in one try no reloads?

>>
>>343113019
Save whenever you feel like, but just make sure you play on Expert.
>>
Thief 1 had more interesting and memorable levels.

>Cragscleft Prison
>The Sword
>Haunted Cathedral
>Lost City

Thief 2 had great levels too, but they're all so grounded in reality that they can be kinda boring in comparison.
>>
>>343113019
Personally, I limit myself about 15 minutes between saves.

Not a whole lot of point in playing if you're quicksave/quickloading the entire way through. Especially if it's not your first time playing.
>>
>>343113412
>but they're all so grounded in reality
Ahh, so here's the crux. See, I'm more into "realistic" settings like Dishonored, so yeah, Thief 1 definitely triggered me on multiple occasions with it's magic bullcrap moments.
>>
>>343113110
I do play on expert but it feels cheap saving/reloading.

I made it up to the sword without using saves but it's becoming really frustrating when the levels are so long and getting caught is basically instant failure on the highest difficulty.

Dishonored is great, mate. I love it as much as I love Thief 2.

They're not really the same kind of game, though. Thief 2 is a pure stealth game. Dishonored is definitely more of a Deus Ex in Steampunk setting.

Not him but I gave up because I was either getting caught every second or reloading to the point that the game was tedious. I'm sure that the game feels amazing once you get a feeling for the map, enemy patrols and know what you're doing but it takes too many reloads and it was frustrating.

I started playing the first Deus Ex at the beginning this year, but I stopped playing. I was pumped because I was also playing Deus Ex; Human Revolution, and I wanted to go back to the beginning of the series. But all I remember was it being very rpg like, and had crap combat. Honestly, I think I just need to get back at it again. The themes where intriguing and the art style was definitely in my taste. I like DX:HR so far, so I imagine DX can't be that far off.

>>
>>343104280
I liked that Thief 1 had a great story that subverted my expectations and a final boss that actually involved thievery. Some wonkiness here and there, but still va very playable and enjoyable game.

Thief 2's clusterfuck of an ending threw me off the first time, and I always feel a bit sour about it when I do my annual play through.
>how the fuck was I supposed to know about all this?
But it's still the better of the two games in spite of its shitty ending sequence. Great level design, great heists, great story and atmosphere.

As for the other Thief games:
Thief 3 is alright if you don't play it after the first two, it's kind of its own thing.
The respawning guards in the town sections is annoying, but the level design is still pretty good. Sadly, the controls got fucked a bit (leaning is useless), among some other things. The story is "there" and they got rid of the painterly cutscenes for in-game rendered crap, but the atmosphere is too good to pass up.

Thi4f isn't very good in general.
>>
I think the main reason people complain about Thief 1's levels is because they played the Thief Gold version with extra hard stuff added like the Thieves Guild map and the Fire Shadow enemies added to Bonehorde.
>>
>>343120585
what's wrong with the fire shadow?

I think it's scary as fuck, to be honest.

Nothing wrong with them in those regards, but a constantly respawning fire enemy with high speed and high damage attacks will likely make a new player waste all their water arrows on them until they figure out you can just backstab them.

i'd rather fuck a burrick desu.

i would say though that thief 3 is a actually a pretty good thief game. they added some much needed new qualities to the gameplay (roaming around the city hub b4 each mission) and managed to still hit home on the sound design. Bugs and jankiness aside it's not bad at all.

thi5f is pretty fun as a game as long as you take it as some retards deviant art fan game for thief.
>>
>>343127998
The problem with deadly shadows, and the solution brought by the dark mod was garrets feet.
Because of the 3rd person view, garrets colision box is much much smaller, and this leads to alof of shit, but also to alot of oportunities when you get whats going on with that sort of cone.
The dark mod, as the original games, got a wider area and that makes it more easy to deal with obstacles or walk on thin paths.
In thief 3 sometimes you can fuck up a jump like the roof to roof to get into fort ironwood, sometimes garret likes to make another step and then jump into nothingness, so he fall.

Not him but...
Thief 3 wasn't a bad game really. I actually quite enjoyed it. It was consolized though but not really dumbed down, I remember someone phrasing it in that for PC players it felt like playing a console game, for console players it felt like playing a PC game on console.

Movement was clunky and the loading times were atrocious, but the latter has mods to fix that.
