Ok, so, you know the magic that characters do? Ether? Well, that comes from the Zohar. the Zohar puts out an energy field, and Gear engines run on that, and people can use that energy to do magic.
The Elements, if I remember, were basically being constructed to be similar to Animus, in that they have a super strong connection to the Zohar, which increases their fighting power.
They were a special unit because of that, having nothing to do with their heritage.

A hefty part of the later game reveals that Fei and Elly are both being constantly reincarnated from some of the few original survivors, the captain's daughter and some kid who happened to survive, it's never clear. When you think about it a lot of mecha works are like that,
the main bad guy is sometimes just some guy controlling things from the shadows who will sometimes go out in battle or just sit in a high political position for the entire story.
The only reason this would rarely happen in games is because you need a final boss, otherwise players would feel unsatisfied.
Although it would be interesting to have a "final boss" that you defeat with dialogue choices that you can string together to destroy his logic.

I assume it was a security measure, just like a lot of other ones on the ship that failed. They were trying to have comms mostly be over hardline that would be harder to infiltrate and easier to cut off by virtue of being able to just physically sever it. Military IRL makes heavy use of hard-wire-only in certain super sensitive base areas, airgap isn't unbeatable but it does add another layer. It's expensive and a PITA for normal use though.

Yeah, way too good for the early 90s, I think time has fuzzed things a bit for us (just like me, sounds retarded to complain about old age in my 30s but I work in tech and everything moves so fast, I definitely can't do 80-100 hour weeks at a startup like I could 10 years ago). For context, even on the PC, games like Warcraft 2 or Marathon 2 or similar were only 1995. PC was a few years ahead of consoles of course, but early 90s was REALLY early for anything, original Doom wasn't until 1993. Early 90s was SNES territory for consoles, remember Chrono Trigger wasn't released until 1995 either, or Commander Keen and the like on the PC, DOS games.
Even then though scifi was already covering the Internet and all sorts of crazy stuff long since.
