JULY 29th, not June 29th. You have a month, bro.

As far as whether or not the upgrade is worth it: If you built or purchased your PC in the last four years, I would say yes. Otherwise, the driver compatibility hassles make it not worth it.

Use OO ShutUp 10 and Spybot Antibeacon.

If any of you do not absolutely want Windows 10 and want the upgrade prompts disabled with any and all downloaded upgrade files removed, you can use Gibson's Never10. It is a program that runs once (not continuously) and sets an edit in your computer that Microsoft made for corporations to block the Windows 10 upgrade from occurring on non-Enterprise editions of Windows.
https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

That being said, I still think it's worthwhile if your computer is four or fewer years old. If it's older then that you should DEFINITELY block the Windows 10 upgrade, as Microsoft is allowing computers with incomplete ("basic") driver support to be upgraded to Windows 10 so they can claim more devices were upgraded to tout the success of the "one windows" platform that Windows Phone, Windows 10, Xbone use.
>>
>>343083203
He's talking about the free upgrade of retail/OEM installed copies of Windows 7 & 8.1 via the GWX update.

>>343083247
This isn't a bad approach if you aren't sure, as the activation of Windows 10 goes against your motherboard and is permanent against that motherboard. If you decide you want 10 on that computer later, you can just reinstall clean without putting in a product key and Windows 10 will automatically activate as your digital entitlement is already stored on Microsoft servers.

It's possible to disable essentially all the features that have privacy concerns. I would note that shit that people had no issue over (e.g. the network connection pinging a microsoft server on IP changes to see if the computer was truly online, on a local network but not online, or offline, or if the user was on a wifi portal they needed to visit a logon page for) in 7/8/8.1 people flipped SHIT over and said HOLY SHIT LOOK AT ALL THE CONNECTIONS TO MICROSOFT IPS.

The defaults are boneheaded for privacy but utilities make it easy to flip all the switches to off.

Bigger objection for me is not being able to defer updates on the home edition, which I think is stupid.

yup. Bought legit W7 Ultimate discs when building my PC back in 2011, and I'm fucking happy I did, seeing how MS is literally shooting itself to the leg while forcing their ten-millimeter dick down everyone's throat.

Went through all my updates with a fine comb and then disabled all automatic Windows updates a few months ago, and I've not looked back. W7 remains on my computers as long as physically possible, and then starts Linux dualbooting.

wow. Go outside man, it can't be healthy to have your entire life revolve around your computer.
>>
>>343083584
>People BOUGHT W7/8?
Any prebuilt laptop or desktop you get comes with a windows license.
Some people buy OEM or retail keys.
A lot of people took advantage to get cheap (Win741 $30 Windows 7 offer or Win8 upgrade offer for new PCs, $15 keys) or free (laundering Windows 8 Pro keys from fake to legitimate via free Windows Media center keys).

Also, Microsoft essentially can't tell the difference between a prebuilt PC running Windows 7 and Windows 7 activated by OEM Activation 2.0 (loaders like DAZ), so any PC activated that way looks legitimate.

They need to get the numbers up of Win10 upgrades to try to get people on the Windows store and convince people to buy shit through it. That's the gambit.

I bought a new legit disc copy of 7 Pro SP1 off amazon for $60 last week

through various circumstances, I ended up doing a fresh install of 10 and 7 on two different computers within a couple days of one another

>7
-needed to plan ahead and put some basic drivers on a cd (usb, ethernet), or just have the motherboard's driver disc handy
-apart from that, was an absolute delight to install. complete breeze
-result is a crisp, clean OS that was a snap to customize to my preferences

>10
-had basic drivers built-in
-installation was fine
-after installation was a fucking two-hour slog through garbage trying to remove all of the ways it's fucking forcing itself in your face saying "HEY! YOU'RE USING WINDOWS 10! DID YOU KNOW!?!?"
-after all that, it's STILL not the way I want, with zero control of the start menu, near-zero control over the appearance of any ui features, and at least two dozen built-in bloatware "apps" that absolutely cannot be removed

tl;dr Microsoft said they wanted ONE BILLION devices upgraded to Windows 10. This claim is because they wanted the Universal Windows Platform (Windows 10/Windows Phone/Xbone) commonality to enjoy cross platform sales of apps, games, etc. and more popularity on the other two platforms for integration.

By all accounts they're well short of that with the one year ending, so they're trying to push it as hard as possible so some Senior division head at Microsoft doesn't get fired for falling substantially short of the goal.

LATEST Nvidia drivers are broken on Windows 10 and causes display crashes. Emulators run better on Windows 7 than Windows 10 for me. If you do the upgrade, certain programs (Deus Ex) may break for reasons unknown.

If you create a DVD or USB and then use what you created to launch the upgrade WITHIN YOUR EXISTING COPY OF WINDOWS before July 29th, then you can get the upgrade and execute it whenever you want.

If you do the upgrade after July 29th it will upgrade and then tell you that you don't have a license and need to do a Windows 10 key.

Once a particular computer is licensed on Windows 10, that motherboard is permanently activated for Win10, even if you reinstall clean.

Human Revolution Director's Cut.

Complete black screen. Game worked fine the day before I upgraded. No idea why. Tried verifying through Steam and that didn't work. Gave up and went back to Windows 7.

Granted it might have been a fluke, but this is why I prefer to reformat for a new OS than upgrade. Microsoft clearly wants people on Windows 10 regardless of compatibility.
>>
>>343086305
Eh, you have to do the upgrade to get the free digital entitlement for licensing on 10, but from that point on you can go Control Panel -> Update & Security -> Recovery -> Reset this PC. You can choose to do this keeping your files and folders but removing your applications, or removing all files and folders. Super easy. Backup recommended before doing it in either case.

You can also clean install from the CD without a product key, or if you're moving a Windows 7 or 8.1 product key (retail) to a new PC, you can install windows 7/8.1 clean without a product key on a new mobo, go to activate windows, put in a 7/8.1 retail key, and it will activate Windows 10, assuming edition of the key and windows you installed are the same (home, pro, etc.)

Since it sounds like you reverted after upgrading through the GWX upgrade or media creation utility, you should be able to install Windows 10 clean from DVD or USB without putting in a product key. Activation would be automatic via digital entitlement of your mobo.

>I appreciate the advice (assuming you aren't a pajeet paid to know all this)
I shan't. Just a neighborhood IT guy waiting for some software to install on my sandbox Linux server, pissing some time away here as the install progresses.

>but why would I consider going back to Windows 10 when Windows 7 worked just fine?
Mainly driver compatibility for certain things, certain apps that won't be backported (Xbox), DirectX 12 if you ever choose to upgrade your graphics card, faster booting, and in the case of Windows 7, the upgrade would get you support past early 2020 (when Windows 7 support ends entirely).

>The new Windows Apps don't appeal to me
Okay then, DirectX 12 may appeal later and longer support lifetimes, faster boot, peripheral driver compatibility... There's also a few articles on this:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2487499,00.asp

If you don't care about the features in the upgrade, no one is forcing you to, and I recommend Never10 to block it in that case.

>Windows 10 would throttle all my other downloads for updates
What are you referring to here, the Windows update P2P shit? That's a control panel setting. It's also easy to disable some of the stupid privacy defaults with OO Software ShutUp10 and Safer-Networking's Spybot antibeacon. Both are freeware, and the former definitely disables the sharing of Windows updates over the internet.
>>

>>343087928
Maybe, to be honest I don't know. When I did it the way you had to do it was launch the upgrade from the prior install of windows and it took care of the rest, not asking about partitions at all.

You could potentially upgrade the existing partition and do the rollback to older windows option, then install to a second partition - that should work fine, as the clean install will retrieve the digital entitlement from MS Activation servers.

Windows 7 got really cheap at certain points - $30 for a retail key - and some people preferred the peace of mind and support from Microsoft directly, or it was "cheap enough" to not care. (Windows 8 got cheaper for $15 as part of the upgrade offer shortly before it came out, and "free" if you used an activator on Win 8 Pro and then put in a free Windows Media center key, it laundered it into a legit key - MSFT killed that quickly, but the keys that were already given out, it was too late).

>>343089381
They settled the lawsuit, if people start suing en masse they'll fight it. In reality they've already backed off a couple more aggressive changes (e.g. automatic scheduling without cancel option if you close it out with the X button in the upper right of the window). People can still sue, but it's unlikely to cause any irreparable harm to MS. They have shitloads of lawyers (not as many as oracle, but still plenty).

Updates are generally safe on Windows 7 but it depends on the method of activation, RemoveWAT is hacky shit and certain other activators fall off. DAZ Loader should be safe for updates including the Get Windows 10 update and the upgrade to ten.

DAZ was essentially an extremely safe activator that took advantage of a loophole of sorts in Microsoft's activation. Microsoft changed activation in Windows 10 and up for this reason. I'm not saying you're wrong, but just context.

Computer system makers (Dell, HP, etc.) activate Windows by putting your product key for Windows in the motherboard itself, in the BIOS (stored on a chip on the board). Whenever you reinstall windows, the copy looks for the key in the computer, and if it's there, Windows gets preactivated.

On computers that shipped with Windows 7, the key was the same in every computer a given manufacturer shipped (HP, Dell, etc.). What DAZ does is insert itself into Windows' loading process, so when it looks for this table that doesn't actually exist on the motherboard, it tells windows that it's there, windows gets activated. Microsoft can't meaningfully get rid of it since it tampers with the boot process.

Windows 8 and up, these keys were made unique per motherboard, meaning this sort of fakeout couldn't be done.

I know of people (*Cough*) who activated Windows 7 either with DAZ or by just directly injecting the SLIC table into their custom built PC, and they were on 7 fine for years and upgraded fine.

Win8 & 10 activation is trickier, it's pretty easy to fake out KMS (enterprise) activation in the short term but it's easier to detect later via updates.

tl;dr If you trust microsoft on this, they'll disable the Win7/win8 update that upgrades to windows 10 after july 29th passes so you don't get force upgraded into a "buy windows 10" scenario.

If you have no intention or desire to upgrade before that date, use Never10 to set a flag on your computer and the GWX update will absolutely not upgrade you to Windows 10 without prompting.

Support for Windows 7 ends January 14, 2020, at which point Microsoft will stop providing support, no further security updates will be provided, and most likely device makers will stop updating or supporting device drivers. You'd be running Windows 7 at your own risk at that point.

You do have another three and a half years before that date though.

>>343090889
>don't be retarded. they settled with her to prevent a class action.
She filed in small claims court, that's not a valid venue for a class action. In California, you can file for a small claim up to $10,000, and attorneys are not generally allowed - meaning Microsoft would have to fly someone who is not a lawyer to California ($400-$1000+ for airfare, most likely $500+ for hotel, meals, rental car, etc.) that is not a lawyer to represent them (could be embarrassing for the company especially if the person flubs their words).

In other words - before they take a software engineer or whatever off his work, have an attorney coach him on what to say and pay that attorneys time, fly him from Washington to Cali, etc. it's cheaper given the risk to just settle the small claim.

If she had filed in regular court then they could have had attorneys file the paper directly for a smackdown.

If your chipset has support and the computer is more recent you can consider it. That being said, Windows 7 has another three years of support and that card is not DX12 capable, I'd probably stick to Win7 myself in that case.

>>343091307
Good idea, badly executed.
The problem is that Windows updates are unhidden when they are updated to latest versions. If the GWX update was updated two days ago and I blocked it, if they update the existing upgrade again today, it's unhidden.

Never10 sets a group policy edit that will prevent the GWX update from doing anything if actually installed. It's Microsoft's recommended way for businesses to ensure that Windows 10 upgrades do not occur on the computers of businesses if they don't want them.

>updates are unhidden when they are updated to latest versions
of course they are unhidden, you can check every file that windows has downloaded for auto update in its registry, use ctrl+f and find the GWX "security update" (it's actually technically adware not a security update) delete it, and never install it again and you won't get the message to update to 10 again.
it's not rocket science.
the hardest part is finding the correct K security update code and that is just googling it.

Vista wasn't perfect on release, the main problem was Microsoft being pussies and allowing OEMs to bully them into minimum requirements for "Vista Ready" advertising that were way too low to run correctly, and not enforcing mandatory driver signing on 32-bit windows. This made machines that use it a clusterfuck.

>7
7 is what Vista should have been and a great OS to succeed XP. They had the problem of not releasing an SP for forever and a reinstall requiring fifty billion updates but they fixed that recently with the update rollup.

>8
8 was a problem, RTC, start menu, etc... no compelling reason to upgrade.

Some people would rather emulate certain older games in Dosbox or virtual machine, the biggest hurdle to compatibility was 16-bit support being dropped in x64 versions of Vista and up. Depends on what you're running though - main thing I wish I could run is Mechwarrior 3 and that doesn't run on Windows 7 either, unfortunately.

A) Never10 is not spyware. It's made by a well regarded computer expert named Steve Gibson, who has been working on computer shit almost assuredly longer than you've been alive, and makes one of the strongest hard drive data recovery tools you can run from a CD/USB out there (Spinrite).

B) As I said, if your objection is to using a third party executable to disable the GWX update, then you can do it via registry or group policy edit. This is one edit that's easy to make by hand, and easier than policing an update list non-stop for months.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351

C) If you are only preventing the GWX update from installing by manually reviewing the update list by checking the KB numbers (who called WHO autistic, again?), then you probably are allowing several other updates that allow backporting of the telemetry options that Windows 10 has. If this DOES happen to be your objection to installing Windows 10 and you didn't block/not again install these updates again, then you missed the point.

D) Again on the autistic point, continuing to review a manual list of updates by knowledge base number is pretty autistic, anon.

If Win7 already bitched about not genuine once then it probably won't activate.

Start -> cmd.exe -> right click -> run as administrator. Then run the command slmgr.vbs /dli (software licensing manager, flag display license information). No, this isn't a delete system32 command.
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn502540(v=ws.11).aspx

Display license information.
By default, /dli displays the license information for the installed active Windows edition. Specifying the [Activation ID] parameter displays the license information for the specified edition associated with that Activation ID. Specifying [All] as the parameter will display all applicable installed products’ license information.

The output will be something like this (image). The key part is line 2.
If the channel is OEM/system builder, then you're probably activated with DAZ or similar faking Windows OEM Activation 2.0, which should survive the upgrade and give you a legit license on 10.

If it's retail or KMS/MAK/Enterprise and you pirated it - it probably won't remain legit on Win10.

As far as the KB3035583 update I'm on 10 now and don't have to care, but I have 16GB of RAM in my laptops, 32GB in my desktop, resource usage is minimal. GWX update sees the Microsoft recommended GPO edit and it just quits without doing anything. I'd rather have the edit in place, even if I also wanted to uninstall the update and manually police the update list.

Gibson is big on the "low impact' thing which is why his EXE to run these commands is less than 100KB and is portable (non-install) - he has a boner for size/resource efficiency.
>>
>>343098407 here
To my first part about the upgrade - ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR PC. In a worst case scenario you don't want to lose all your shit if Windows 10 isn't upgraded. If you have OEM activation on Windows 7, not genuine messages are essentially unheard of on free Win10 upgrades. But it never hurts to have a backup!

Either he's retarded or doing this for memepoints.
>>
>>343098846
You can't disable or defer updates on Windows 10 Home, but you can select the "Notify to schedule restart" option in the control panel. Generally you also have to ignore several prompts to restart before Windows will force you, like with this guy:

>>343098407
Ok thanks.
>>
>>343082812
Sooner or later they will literally force you to update or use 10 anyway. Either you dual boot it with Linux or stick with it.

This is old news, by using Google or any microsoft service your privacy has already been raped to hell and back. It's not like W10 changes much.

Did Microsoft fuck up sending out serials to those with 7 Pro/Ultimate and 8/8.1 Pro? I thought enthusiasts would have any Pro version of Windows because a Home version has a cap for RAM.

>>343099724
Google is probably worse than Microsoft on this, Android phones report your location data to Google on a per minute basis by default, which is how Opinion rewards, Foursquare, etc. get really creepy about exactly where you are.

If you own an Android device: You owe it to yourself to try this link:
https://maps.google.com/locationhistory/

windirstat

feels good

>>343099989
Nah, but plenty of people were too cheap for a pro license on earlier versions of windows.

Windows 7 Home premium was subject to a RAM limit of 16GB on 64-bit editions, enough for most home users.

Windows 8 (non pro, i.e. home) was limited to 128GB on 64-bit editions, which is plenty.
>>
just did it
haven't tested any games but it was surprisingly easy
now to download all those 468 solitaires from the store
>>
Would you be able to upgrade with a non genuine copy of windows 7?
>>
>>343095602
not that guy, but i don't remember how i handled disabling the win10 nag (i dual-boot win7/win10)

if i have all this telemetry shit already on, is there a utility i can use to get rid of it in one go?

and I'm back. That was actually really painless. Turned off all that spyware shit during installation. Now what are some setting I should change

>I want all the apps gone off the start menu
>I want the search bar off the start menu

W10 uninstalled classicshell which sucks but everything else transferred over smoothly.
>>
>>343101173
save this as a cmd file -> right click it -> run as administrator - it will remove any of the telemetry updates you have already installed
https://gist.github.com/xvitaly/eafa75ed2cb79b3bd4e9
>>
>>343101117
Yes, if it's activated with DAZ loader.
>>
>>343101328
thanks, man
>>
>>343083616

Half of that shit you can turn off, and only applies if you are using a M$ account and not local.

Then to add you can uninstall all of it.

This makes processing most of the privacy options either

If you'd prefer to do it manually
http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/windows-10-doesnt-offer-much-privacy-by-default-heres-how-to-fix-it/
as far as shit on the menu, the searchbar on open is a default, but if you start typing something in it they'll be a cog to the left side of the monitor, you can disable cortana, web search, and search history.
as far as apps gone off the menu, right click them

there's also some additional options if you click the start menu itself -> properties
>>
>>343101592
I disabled everything during the installation, also got rid of all the apps.

Kinda what I'm wondering. I have 8.1 on a laptop and thinking about just upgrading it to 10.

You can disable all that spyware shit during installation and removing apps/adds is as simple as right clicking>remove. The only things that didn't come over were speecy and classicshell.
>>
>>343102135

Are you having problems with Windows 8 that Windows 10 fixes?
Do you need one of the new features of Windows 10?

If you answered no to both of these, don't waste your time.
>>
>computer at work has win10 nag
>ignore it
>computer decides on its own, with no input on my end to reboot and install botnet 10 in the middle of the day

>virus install is finally complete
>graphical drivers, network drivers and printer drivers all fucked, all of my software has issues of sorts
>upgrade back to Windows 7
>block everything related to Microsoft bullshit in hosts file and firewall

I can't believe Microsoft is allowed to be this aggressive with their spyware. When Windows 7 support finally ends I'll switch to Loonix.

A point to make here: Windows 10 when you upgrade doesn't use product keys. It effectively uses your old Windows 7 or whatever key.
>>
>>343083808

Yeah first one applies if you use a M$ Account which you must be stupid to do so. Then 2nd one is also with a M$ Account, 3rd one is literally clickbait.

Its for about 2-4 programs the list is very very fucking small. Oh yeah also for M$ Accounts. Plus it's also talking about Windows Store Apps lmao. Please stop spreading the bullshit the media feeds you and learn to research shit yourself.

>-after all that, it's STILL not the way I want, with zero control of the start menu, near-zero control over the appearance of any ui features, and at least two dozen built-in bloatware "apps" that absolutely cannot be removed

Yeah you can delete them.

To remove any package:
>Remove-AppxPackage "PackageFamilyName"

Get package names by:

>Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers
> The one needed to delete is the PackageFamilyName

Do this all in powershell as an admin

>>343087890
If you use a Microsoft Account when signing up then they will do nothing. Just use a local account and worry about nothing.

>>343089009
Literally never had this happen and honestly I just hibernate my PC because its superior and I never have to update.

>>343088494
You're using a fucking shitty alienware with a mobile shitset of course it'll run like shit.

>>343090238
Use ImageGlass it's superior to Ifran.

>>343103012
It's also only the upgrade version which does this, and it's locked to HWID. So better keep that hardware working. I kid you can contact support to fix that.

Should I upgrade from 8.1 to 10 if I don't care much about spying? I doubt anyone cares that I jerk to latex porn, play Dota 2 and read 4chan.
>>
anyone can tell me how to fix the sound on my laptop? Right side of headphones don't work.
>>
>>343103272

If you use a local account you don't have to worry about anything.

All your shit will work fine.
>>
>>343099328
Also, if you have W10 Pro, you can use regedit instead have "Notify Updates" so you can choose when/what to install. All in all, from install to drivers to making settings what I want, took about 2.5 hours. Not ideal, but could have been worse.
>>
>>343101320
just reinstall classic shell, it's compatible with win10
>>
Fuck it. I'm doing it tonight. The new Forza looks good and I'm not buying a Xbone.
>>
>>343103803
Opposite for me, the only thing holding me back is that supposedly W10 works poorly or not at all with old games.
>>
>>343097252
Because it uses precious bandwidth that you could be using to get a better ping in games senpai.
>>
>>343103525
I'm happy with the start menu the way it is now. See no reason to reinstall it.
