I don't think its the best silent hill game, but its definitely the most interesting, and sp00py. Playing it right now in the dead of night, its definitely scary. I think PT drew some influences from it, no?

True. It's perhaps the most underrated SH game so far. The overall "hate" towards it feels weird too.
I liked it already back in 2004, and I still quite like it today. Sure, it ain't SH1 & 2's god-tier horror experience, but it's super atmospheric, pretty, and has some clever ideas.

Really dig the whole Room's concept.

Neat, a Silent Hill thread!
How about reposting the fancy SH PC Guide + the DL links :

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" fix works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

here's the recommended emulator settings for SH1. Works great on all other games too.

The plugins used are:
-Pete's OpenGL 1.78; (more options & better performance than 2.x version)
-Eternal's SPU Engine.

alternatively just use a software renderer for very 1:1 PS1-like graphics, including 240p only.
...OR just buy the game from PSN Store for few bucks.

I just got it, and I can't help but feel that the atmosphere is ruined by the weird camera system. Does it make more sense later in the game?
>>
I always wonder if there is a completely different version of this game that I never got to play that was really good and I just got the shitty version. People who liked this game can't have played the same version I did. And I can even admit that it had some cool concepts, visuals and music. But really? This was just not a good game. No immersion, no bosses, horrible sound and enemy design, boring characters and half the game is a fucking escort mission through areas you've already explored. Was this their first Silent Hill game?

Which "camera system" are you referring to?
The first-person Room segments, or the 3rd person "exploration" parts?

Either way, the camera ain't that much different from past games, but the weird new iteration of "Search View", which is pretty much just a "reset camera behind character" quick-key now, does make it feel clunkier. The 2D control style doesn't help the thing either.

That being said, it's still quite playable, and some later weapons allow you to deal with tougher fights by utilizing the charged attack's invincibility frames.

There's no "other versions". I played it on PS2 only, and I was helluva immersed. Especially the parts inside the room, watching the world live its daily life while you're suffering of nightmarish horrors, with your personal safe house slowly turning creepier by the minute, the only hint of escape lying behind the nightmarish worlds behind the holes ...

in fact, I'd say SH4 is one of the, if not THE most disturbing, spooky, and also interesting SH games out there.

Escort quests are only bad when your AI partner is an idiot who can't keep up, and is vulnerable to everything. SH4 luckily avoids all these problems by making your "escort" invincible, and capable of fighting.

Also no, it was not my first SH. I played all the games as they came out originally. SH1 is still my favorite, #2 coming right behind it. I still like SH4 very much; heck, even more so nowadays, when the random western jerks have managed to totally butcher the entire series, bad.

I agree that it is LEAGUES better then the western developed titles, but it still is by far the weakest of the original Team Silent games. Like I said, it had some interesting concepts. Like the apartment becoming more and more haunted as the game progressed. But I never felt nearly as immersed as with the first 3 games. Which I attribute to the characters. I just didn't care about them. Henry was boring. Eileen was boring. All we get of the victims is some flavor text that usually painted them as garbage people. So when they inevitably die it's like "whatever".
And none of the AI was good, so I don't know what you're talking about. Eileen would just run over and start swinging her purse or riding crop like crazy, get a chainsaw to the face which pretty much guaranteed you a bad ending.
And escort missions are always bad. Especially when they make up literally half of the games content and don't even take you through new areas.
Silent Hill 4 has some cool ideas, but NONE of them are particularly well executed and the only interesting character is Walter.

I only ever played a demo of this. It was in one of the PlayStation magazines along with MGS3 and some others.

Worth a full playthrough? I see it at GameStop all the time but never buy it for some reason.

Bumping in support of a Silent Hill thread, I have to work but I want it to last till I get back

Certainly.
I'd really recommend playing the first 3 first, if you already haven't.

>>343085298
Well, different strokes for different people I guess. While I agree it's not as high quality as the first three, it wasn't exactly terrible game either.

It's kinda hard to compare SH4 to the others, as it was a lot more experimental on purpose. That being said, I had spoopy good time with it. Walter is also the true "MC" of the game, something which might confuse a lot of people at first. Henry's literally this blank slate for the player to relate into, and while his seemingly stoned "whatever"-ish attitude might seem odd or lazy at first, I'd say it fits perfectly well to a guy who's been locked in his apartment, seeing nightmares for a full week.
>>
>>343086131
Not being aggressive, just keeping the discussion going. I actually liked parts of 4.

I have no problems with the game for it's experimental nature. Some aspects worked, while some(most) didn't. But it overall lacks polish. Like they had a bunch of ideas, made half a game and then... didn't know what to do next. The story and characters seemed like vehicles for the new gameplay and setting changes. And I have to point out that Harry and James were very much designed with the "blank slate" in mind. However, even with their own personal touches, where much more relateable then Henry. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, has no real impact on the story and his reactions were so unnatural. And not in a spooky way.

my hate for it isn't the games fault at all. I started and had my save corrupt 3 times for the game. After the third I got pissed and just stopped entirely, kind of wish they'd do a proper HD remake of 1-4 on modern consoles.

However hate aside SH4 will always have the best scare for me, when I was younger I was messing with the phone on the game and decided to call my house for shits and giggles. As soon as I hit the last number out phone rang with an unknown caller as the ID. I nearly shit myself at that moment.
