You know what I liked most about playing an MMO?

Your reputation mattered. You had a persistent character, and getting end-game things done required cooperation. If you were a known scumbag or no fun to play with, you would gain a reputation as such and thus be unable to do aforementioned end game stuff.

That kind of social filter allowed me to meet some great people, and rewarded the genuinely nice people better than any "commend" system ever has.

Yes and then they started making MMOs that weren't just about fucking around and grinding and tried attracting player bases over 50k in size so they had to come up with ways to let more than 5% of them experience the content.
>>
>>343074207
Umm, excuse me? But some of us have lives. I don't have the time for that kind of thing with working twelve hours a day to take care of my wife's son. I'm glad modern MMOs like FFXIV and WoW exist where I can just log in for a half hour a day and be done. =) And because of lockouts, those tryhard nolifers can't get ahead and leave me behind!
>>
>>343075095
Yeah, it's good that they sterilized the genre to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Who wants to work hard and socialize to achieve their goals? I should be able to just queue into anything in a menu with complete strangers. Being forced to make friends in a multiplayer game is retarded.

Man I loved FFXI, I miss it.
>>
>>343074207
I don't want to participate in a fucking popularity contest just so I can play a game and be allowed to have fun. If you weren't in a super special club or didn't want to suck your guild leader off, you were out of luck.
>>
>>343075858

That's not how it worked in FFXI, not only did everyone have multiple circles of friends but you also could have multiple guilds. Basically the game forced you to play with other people and you were given endless opportunities to talk to them and make friends.
>>
While playing FFXIV, I sometimes get flashbacks to XI. It hurts, and as much as I'd like to go back to FFXI and just play it again, it's just not the same without all the people. Private servers have too few people, and the official ones are just solo grinding until high level. It hurts.

I'm going on a tangent here, but besides being reminded of XI sometimes, I get SaGa vibes as well from both XIV and XI. Anyone else hope that SE would even consider making an MMORPG for that?

Same, I miss FFXI and the social aspect of the game. You lived in the game.

I remember when my Linkshell went to Konschtat Highlands just to eat cookies under a tree on a hill, when the game first came out.

The zones, the music, the needing to forge everlasting friendships (until a "teehee imma gurl gimme lewts" joined to ruin it all) and static parties because it made your journeying together that much more personal.

The game was so awe inspiring. Everything was so complex, in a good way. Weather affecting magic. Moon phase affecting fishing. Elemental days and direction affecting crafting. Certain actions aggroing certain enemies, like Magic to Elementals.

Riding a boat from one port to another, fishing on the boat, being attacked by skeletal pirates or the Kraken, and everyone courageous enough to fend them off.

The game had so much immersion and held you, as a player, in such high regard to be someone, and not just a forgetful face. I miss FFXI and the stories I made with friends I've met from across the globe.

But then Abyssea happened. And then the game went to shit.

The directions, yes. The days of the week though had actual effects on many things affected by elements, crafting included.
>>
>>343076979
And can't forget training a Tremor Ram to Valkrum Dunes and shouting that there is a Tremor Ram on the other side (this was before they patched MPK - Monster Player Killing, where the mobs would walk away or despawn).

It was quite chaotic and fun when both sides of the zones were dangerous. One side with a group of Goblins, and the other side with a Tremor Ram.
>>
>>343077285
Not sure, I'm 100% positive the elemental days affected crafting, and the direction you faced (when facing the elemental star) also played a part in the search for higher High Quality chance.

That's what I want to know. It's like asking how the fuck would a FF or DQ MMO work but even crazier due to how weapon skill progression works. I'd imagine they'd have to use actual levels with being able to choose with a points system to pump into stats so that people don't accidentally completely screw up their builds. I would kind of like if they kept Sparking in, but I know that it would result in a ton of bitching thanks to today's climate for the genre.

I completely understand why MMOs have become what they are, but at the same time it's killed any appeal for me. Anything later than early EQ2/WoW has been a completely pointless waste of countless hours just to have big numbers where no one gives a shit about anything and everything's a fucking bore.

The stuff OP's talking about might seem weird or un-fun to some but it's honestly the only thing that ever made this genre appealing at all to me and MANY people I know in the first place. I wish there were some low-key MMO type experiences you could still have like that but outside of private servers of older games that feel literally stuck in the past and depressing, there doesn't seem to be.

I'm going to be really sad if XI's ultimate mob isn't a rabbit.

They'll probably cheap out and have some finale dragon / crystal / Ultra AV Warden Balor fusion, but the old mantra always rang true that "no matter what level you are in FFXI, there's always a rabbit that can kick your ass"

>>343077154
At this point in time, it is the only quality kinentic MMO that my pals and I can play together.

I've been trying to drag them over to EVE, but they whine and complain that it looks too daunting for them, despite the skill system being perfect for their now aged lifestyles and playtime.

>>
>FFXI

>takes minutes to recover from killing a single mob
>you get so little XP that no one ever leveled solo, they simply quit
FFXI is great for those sort of people who like to brag about how much time they wasted in a shitty game.

It wasn't even fun. The combat was a single step up from ancient menu-based JRPGs, but you could at least move around freely while going through menus.

You get a lot more experience in parties since you can get exp chains going, and those get you mondo bonus experience, like triple what you get for killing one mob. Having to rest to recover MP was pretty annoying, I'll agree, but they added jobs that could heal without using MP but used TP instead. DNC was such a great job in that game.

I honestly wish this was a singleplayer open world instead of an MMO. The designs look too good to be wasted on something that will likely turn into a F2P MMO these days. Also a solo game would establish the world and lore and gain more fans for a possible future MMO in the franchise.
>>
>>343081313
Yeah, I don't understand why people that don't like what makes MMORPGs fun can't just play singleplayer games or faster paced multiplayer games, like shooters. If they can't do that because they're bad at games, they should just read a book or watch TV instead.

DARKFALL: NEW DAWN
It's DF 1.0 but with additional UO inspired shit. It's free for now, i don't recall what it will eventually cost. This is sort of a shill because i like Darkfall but i mention it as it's definitely a game where shit you do matters -- good and bad. You flat out could not solo in most MMOs back then because your class/job failed to self-sustain after huge burst of damage from random mobs. WoW brought in the holy trinity that no one can seem to peel away from and its sickening to always have end-game content revolve around the trinity. I actually have concepts where you would have zones be raided by giant monsters that would one-shot anyone or anything, but it was a matter of knee-jerk reactions without any pancakes to assist where something is going to be dropped on you. Remember how MMOs used to require people to pay attention to the model animations to figure whether they were going to do a spell or cast a cleave? Yeah, that's all fucking gone now and it pisses me off that everyone uses visual aid for dumbfucks.

This is just me whining cause fuck it.

Yeah, i loved original darkfall. Played with a RL buddy and we joined some roleplaying clan that was part of a huge alliance (we normally are dickheads in pvp games so wanted to try something different). I was impressed with the politics between guild/clans more than anything else. Our side eventually lost a huge war but I've never had so much fun losing in a game.
One of my favorite memories was still being new and at the clan town - they were roleplayers but called it "functional roleplaying", in that we didn't have to be in character but used various roles and functions within the guild to foster roleplaying. Anyhow, i was dicking around raising blacksmithing or smelting or something when i got told that the leader of the big alliance was coming along with guards, he collected taxes every week from everyone or something. So I was instructed that I certainly didn't have to roleplay, but to try to avoid being an asshole if i could help it.
>Dude at the wall shouts that the king is coming
>gates open, king and his guards come in
>high ranked fags of guild welcome him, they have a short roleplay'ish conversation, trade him the taxes/materials
>i just stay quiet and respectful to not ruin their fun
>king leaves with his squad along to the next town in the alliance
Meanwhile they had dudes patrolling ahead, making sure to watch for ambushes and shit. I love stupid things like that, it really made the game for me.

Anyhow, re: the reboot --- it's free for now, I'm downloading it at the moment. After that it's uh, i forget. I want to say 30 bucks but I'm not sure they've even said yet. And this is their beta type thing so I think things get wiped but clans that participate get some bonuses on holdings or skill gain later, which i think is scheduled for later this year.
I think they have some useful FAQ on their site if you care enough. Keep in mind its Darkfall with added shit, but the best part is NO AVENTURINE. They cashed the check and they're out.
>>
>>343084498
You're not alone.

Fuck FFXIV for also catering to the retard crowd. The last 1.x iterations still made you look for certain animations to know when the mob was going to shit stomp you in, and the overworld had actual threat and no leash range of 15 feet.

Yeah, i'm cautiously optimistic. From what I've seen so far it sounds great, since original DF was fun but i wanted more sandbox style stuff than it had. I like their proposed changes and QoL stuff (as in not needing to use autohotkey to switch weapons and shit) but it's still up in the air how it will really be. If nothing else just original DF is pretty fun.
I played a shitload of DF 1.0 and just while browsing right now realize I've forgotten so much, so one thing I'd suggest is to lookup some starter shit if they don't have something on their forums. I'll be home this afternoon and will hop in then and make a handsome ork to fuck elves up with, i'll kill some goblins or something and try to remember things.
