My brother went to see the film and gave me his free month. I haven't played since vanilla and tried it out. I can definitely see the complaints people have with the killed server community, rushing content to just hit a daily quest grind, and very easy and quick content in general. It's still a bit fun though. I couldn't play my old favorite classes because they are so different than what they were it irked me, but the new monks and DKs are really fun. But apparently everything that I like about them now is being pruned or dumbed down for Legion. It was a nice month, I guess.

I did the whole level up->get gear and attunement to the raid->kill bosses and get gear->repeat until next expansion song and dance through vanilla and TBC and was just burned the fuck out by the time wotlk came around. You guessed wrong. I played Nostalrius at launch because I was done with how shitty retail was, and the BC private server I was currently playing was too buggy/too underpopulated. I enjoyed leveling and experiences some of the old zones again, and discovering zones which back in the day I never leveled in (Darkshore for example).
What happened was I began leveling with friends, then at around level 30 they got bored and went back to retail. I continued onwards. Problem is I was always slightly behind the current endgame because my friends at the time were being shitters and I had to wait for them constantly. By the time I hit 60, BWL was the new endgame and so it was hard finding pick up groups for older content, and even then I had to rely on RNG to give me the drops I wanted so I could be MC ready.

You don't even need to level professions now - garrisons let you craft gear past your level and even let you use professions you don't have. You don't even need to gather either, it's all in the garrison and you don't even need the skill to gather it. WoD mats have literally zero AH value right now.
I will say this though; the raiding is better than it's ever been in terms of design and mechanics. It's a damn shame that it's literally all there is to do and that four difficulties of the same raid kills progression.

In Legion the classes definitely feel more fun then they've had in a long long time, but I have a feeling everything is going to become unfun to appease arena fags.

I prefer kronos. Nostalrius had way more day-ruining bugs and shittier scripting(for every problem on k2 with scripting, I can mention one for nos). Not to mention there was way more chinks and the lag was worse. My ping is higher on k1/k2 but there was more of a delay on nos.

It was. I had no trouble getting into dungeons and in PvP I was pretty competent, despite lacking the tools other classes had. All things considered so it was somewhat fun. It wasn't until TBC where Ret was overwhelmingly shunned and even denied spot in Heroics due to lack of crowd control.
But it was my first MMO and I loved every second of the adventure and social life. Unfortunately I wasn't socially competent enough to get into a proper raiding guild and too stubborn to respec, so there's that.
I'd do it all again if legacy Vanilla turns out to be a thing. I loved playing a burly melee class so Warriors would've been better for me but Paladin grew on me.

The problem with being a defensive class is that you're a class that's made to react but has little influence yourself other than the occasional crit and Hammer. Enemies with better tools would always dictate the fight and you'd have to rely either on luck or for them to slip up and make a mistake.
You waste your 30 sec Blessing of Freedom, you're stuck trying to get that Cleanse to work only for it to dispel another trash debuff. You blow your hammer too early, you enemy has almost a minute of non-interruptable gameplay. And so on, and so on...

Not him, but regardless of whether or not you consider the kit lacking, I had no unwinnable 1v1 match-up in vanilla. In fact, I can't recall losing to anyone even somewhat consistently.
There was one equally geared warrior that managed to beat me like half of the time since it was just about who managed to crit more and whether or not my SoC went off as we kept mashing buttons.
Oh, and the best geared feral druid could never kill me and would never die either, so that'd be a stalemate/loss.

There were a few ret/rogue teams that managed to almost get gladiator from 2v2 iirc. I just played holy because it had viable combinations for every bracket.

I played on Chromaggus, a server that came to be like 9 months after release, so we were a bit behind in progress for the first two years.

Rank 12 gear + TUF to
T2 + Ashkandi to
T2,5 + ashkandi/low end naxx weapons. No one on our server ever cleared vanilla KT... or Sapph, I think.
By the time I had t2,5 gear I felt pretty dominant in 1v1, but of course that had a lot to do with being blatantly overgeared. Many of the top PvE heroes with equal gear knew nothing about PvP so I just destroyed them.
