Limbo sucked. It's amazing how a bad-to-mediocre platformer heavily based on dodgy physics was able to attain so much critical acclaim by simply using multiple aspects of the video game equivalents of Oscar bait.

There are many legitimate ways videogames can blur medium boundaries. Many games make good use of text, many change up the framing of the visuals to get an effect like a comic book or a specific artistic movement. The modern standard of visuals in videogames could also be seen as a general trend towards the other major moving visual media, video.
Length is not really one of those. Mediums are not blended when the length of an example from one approaches the average of another. A tv series isn't more like a videogame because it collectively has several hours of run time. It might still be a good game for it's price, but if you're only going to get 3 hours out of it, it better be damn good or very replayable if it's above even $10 bucks. If we want to be charitable.

Got to play the demo through a friendfrom a video game review site, here's my impressions: it's literally more Limbo, in 2.5d, with an actual story this time. The art style and animations are fucking amazing, but it's the same puzzle platformer/physics gameplay as Limbo, with some stealth elements. Not sure about length, played the second level through in about half an hour. Probably not a 10, but a really nice game if you're into that sort of gameplay.
>>343068701

Most of the obvious SJW comments these days, are made by individuals who simply get buttmad just thinking 4chan and can't sleep until trying to btfo at least one "bigoted" comment. Western developers and media have teamed up and successfully divorced the gameplay from the experience
It works like a charm. As a developer you don't have to:
- design levels
- hire a good artist
- hire a good animator, or animate at all
- bother with gameplay other than "hold W to go forward" or if you're going really deep, mouselook

Final Fantasy (pick your favourite)
Dragon Quest (same as above)
Star Ocean 2
Mana Khemia
Any SMT game
There. I named 5 without even resorting to sequels to pad the numbers
>>343065926
So, this will be more than enough to stand it, even have 2 more hours to do something else.

Gamergate.
Try two years after the incident.

No game deserves a 10/10
>>343072892
You could see danger in LIMBO, and you were even taught what things do before you encountered them.
The only time where LIMBO had the bullshit trial and error was where you're running across the roofs and random electricity floor turns on.
>>343072892
Yeah, there was plenty of that now that I think of it. I guess I didn't mind that seeing that I enjoyed Super Meat Boy
>>343066212
This guy gets it.
>>343073137
But there is no trial and error in Meat Boy, it's muscle memory.

Gee I dont know anon
ITT Games that are shit because they aren't 30+ hours long
>>343064897
Why do people even take IGN into consideration? Their """reviews""" have always been the bottom of every joke, giving 9-10 to any shit that looks pretty or is popular at the moment.
>>343073248
Or, you know, lasting and engaging content.
When did /v/ get filled with casuals?
Well, it don't matter that much as it won't sell as well as a good game would and the sites will just lose their credibility a bit more.
>>343073517
>Multi quotes
Your point is correct, but stop that nonsense.
>>343066212
Most VNs and narrative puzzle games wouldn't be as good if they were 30 hours long, let alone 60.
>>343066212
I see your point but I disagree, because it leads to way too much filler. Just look at the trend of open world games and how full they are of senseless fetch quests and procedurally generated caves.
I prefer games around 15-20 hours but with a fuckton of replayability where you can actually do different things in another playthrough.
>>343065026
This mentality is why video games will never be an art medium.
>>343073731

How's your first year of college treating you?
>>343073731
They won't be until the people reviewing can actually be critics instead of having such a self-serving interest in the industry. Most people in the industry are still trying to prove that their lives aren't wasted on children's toys, so they hand out 10/10 to any pretentious puzzle walking sim to show their parents and other adults that what they do isn't a joke.
>>343073964
Being viewed as an art medium has no intrinsic value. It just promotes circle jerking and pretentiousness. Just like film.
>>343074178
I didn't realize Inside sacrificed its gameplay. Can you give an example of this?
>>343064897
no game should get a 10/10
10/10 means its perfect and no game is
>>343074325
You're moving the goalpost.
Anon was referencing the idea of being viewed as an art form, not the subject of the OP itself.
>>343064897
it probably just has some stupid memorable twist that makes retards think it's amazing just because it blew their mind regardless if the rest of the game was garbage.
>>343072892
Is trial and error really even an invalid approach to designing a puzzle game?
I mean, in a game like IWBTG where the game punishes too many errors with starting over or something, sure.
But Limbo doesn't really take issue with you dying, deaths reload quickly and you lose very little in the way of progress. The idea is to learn by doing (and dying), same way the idea in any puzzle game is to try things that don't work until you can learn enough about the puzzle to do the thing that DOES work.
I don't think there's ever been a good puzzle game NOT based on this approach. The closest you can get to a well-designed puzzle without trial and error is bullshit like in the Zelda games where you push the only pushable block into the only place you can push it, until the chimes sound and you're allowed to progress.
>>343073232
And that's somehow better? In the end, you're still doing the same thing multiple times.
>>343074486
Give me an example of a game that sacrificed its gameplay in order to be more artsy.
>>343066553
Is length one of those things that define a video game? What is the length of a videogame by definition then?
>>343074719
The Order: 1886
it's really go tho, too bad it's just 4 hours.
>>343074719
Bioshock Infinite
>>343066178
I say because all of those games are shit. No video game that attempted to be a fucking movie and video game hybrid ever had good gameplay.
