So far the idol stuff has been very minimal, for the sake of there being a purpose and story. I'll agree that I went into it expecting nothing exceptional, but the combat is great and the artwork/graphics are beautiful.
As I said, it's a lot more of a Persona game than SMT, it's got some fusion aspect with being able to combine enemies you've collected with your Mirages to get new skills. It's got similar combat style to Persona, where enemies have weaknesses that can lead to chain attacks.

I've actually played the game.
The length is fine for a JRPG, probably 25-30 hours for 1 run through without side quests. Which from my experience is about average.
The game has a lot of problems but length isn't one of the biggest.
The characters are trash, the plot is retarded, the games difficulty is all over the place (it's pretty much brain dead easy on everything except escort missions which are down right impossible at times), it's hard as fuck to figure out what is happening in battle and the game has a tendency to reuse a lot of areas.
It's not a terrible game, the gameplay is actually fun (if you ignore the shitty difficulty and camera), but if you don't like JRPGs then don't bother with it.

OK guys I will make one more post in this thread about the game - which I have played - I will TRY to make it about objective facts in the game without opinion and you can form an opinion after you've played the game in your own time.
The game is similar in size, scope, scale, aesthetic, story and other stuff to the ORIGINAL STAR OCEAN ON SNES despite actually being a complete game where SO1 was utterly unfinished in places.
The combat is real time, there are light and strong attacks as well as heraldry for spells.They have a triangle weakness system. There is 5 decent sized cities that all have a distinct look. There are multiple roles that take role points that give your character auto abilities and bonuses that can be swapped around like a class system. Spells can be learned and can also be found by searching in the field and taught via the item found.
The characters are less tropey than the last Star Oceans (I think this is definitive) the field skills for cooking, mining, etc all remain from the past SO's and are intact. There are graphics that for a cross platform title are (good) the game performance is very good, despite idiots complaining about stupid af shit like "THE PLAYER CHARACTER WALKS THROUGH MY CHARACTERS LIKE A GHOST 5/10 GAMESPOT"
The game does not allow you to travel through space, but there is a large overworld and many dungeons as well as multiple difficulties and post dungeon as well. Also there are bulletin boards with side quests for new weapons, roles, items etc. The game is (easy, I know this is opinion) but it's unanimous really, but there are other difficulties which make it harder so really who cares. There are spaceship dungeons as well. The game has sci fi elements from the get go. There is a loli. There is a story with twists.
