Does this game actually have wonky combat, or are people just shitters and can't get over dice roll combat?
>>
>>343024006
How good is the original Alan Wake? I've had that shit sitting in my library for years.
>>
Stalker
>>
>>343024136
Really good for story integration into a game. Pretty well written, too. Not a bad third person shooter, either.
>>
VA-11 Hall-A. It's really comfy an is a nice throwback to cyberpunk games like Snatcher.

Alan Wake is less comfy and more creepy. Very good game, though.

>>343024136
Its pretty good. Lots of comfy PNW wilderness to look at.

>wonky combat
The combat is unique. You probably haven't played something like it before. But it grows on you. There's a system to it and once you get used to it, it sticks.
>dice roll
Not sure what you mean. Using strong vs light or group attacks is rooted with who you fight. Fast enemies require the fast stance while the heavy-hitting strong attack is usually reserved to weakened and large enemies that can't actually dodge.

Like, I really recommend people to give it a shot. The game's not much about the combat but the story, the city, the environment and characters. Playing through Witcher 2 now and it feels really "eh" in comparison and it's a shame.
>>
>>343024383
>The combat is unique.
It only exists because of the shitty Bioware engine. It's not unique; it's a forced turd.
Overall game is still good enough for it to be worth it if you're willing to get used to it, but even seasoned fans will tell you just to start on 2.

Another bland 2deep4u cover shooter.

I should've worded it better. It's not unique as in blindblowing or good. But it's ... different. Once you get used to it, it works fine though.
>start on 2
Honestly, don't skip 1. Playing through 2 now and it's just too different. I miss the bagpipes ...
>>
>>343024006
It's not a dice roll, it's a rhythm game.

W1 has some of the worst combat the industry has ever seen, and it really is kind of funny when people on /v/ try to defend it and call it shit like deep and layered.
>>
The Metro series is about as atmospheric as you can get in video games.

>>343025008
Guess it depends on the fan.
I have a friend who even reads the novels, and he just told me to start with 2. I had already played 10 hours of 1 at that point, though.

>>343025081
But Wind Waker is really atmospheric.

That's pretty silly. The combat's not fantastic but it's really not as bad as people make it out to be. W1 left a horrible impression on me at the start. Came back a year later, gave it another shot and got fucking hooked.
>>
>>343024383

The combat is shit, everyone knows it

>That's pretty silly.
No. Not at all.

The combat is nothing but literally left clicking to a rhythm you memorize in the first 20 minutes. And you do that for 30 hours.

There's lots of reasons to play The Witcher. The combat is not one of them.
>>
>>343025008

Can vouch. First game had better story and a better combat system that isn't random hack and slash. You also have to be on your toes and plan out potions in advanced. In the second game, there is only one hard section and it's only annoying hard. Witcher 1 has many challenging sections throughout the game.

However, I can see seasoned players suggesting to start on 2. The same reasons why Fallout seasoned players suggesting to start on 3 or New Vegas instead of Fallout 1 or Fallout 2. Witcher 1 might feel dated to newer gamers who are use to triple A production quality. The graphics were okay at the time. The voice acting can be straight up cringeworthy. The UI can be confusing as hell. The story, though better, is intertwined much more with the Witcher world and lore. Newer players generally wants the game service the story to them and not hunt everything for themselves. Witcher 1 requires a bit of incentive from the player's to piece together the story. 2 and 3 hands the story to you. Not to say that is the wrong, but it's a more modern approach to storytelling in games.

Probably one of the cosiest things I've done in a game is play blackjack in Blackwater in RDR while there is a storm. Good lord that is atmospheric.

Actually I can't remember if it was poker or blackjack. It was whichever one was in the outside terrace part of the saloon. I think it was blackjack.
>>
>>343026091
>Witcher 1 has many challenging sections throughout the game.
For sure.

I really struggled to get through swamp. It was just so fucking boring.
>>
>>343025959
It's not even close to the worst in the industry though. And the combat system manages to be more interesting than hack and slash introduced in 2. Spamclicking just kills eveyrthing.

I really think Witcher 1 is woefully underrated. The combat is what turns most people off which is a shame, because the game's strength isn't the fights, though I did end up enjoying that.
>>
>>343024136
Alan Wake was always fucking cool, people just can't get over "2deep4u". Poet's of the Fall's role in that game as the fictional band Old Gods of Asgard is great.
>>
>>343026381
>It's not even close to the worst in the industry though.
It's definitely up there, Anon.

>And the combat system manages to be more interesting than hack and slash introduced in 2.
Dodging and timing attacks in an interactive combat system is infinitely more fucking interesting that "click, wait. click, wait, click, wait, click, wait, click" for 30 fucking hours.

>Spamclicking just kills eveyrthing.
I agree. It was fucking atrocious in W1

I wanted to like the first Witcher. I really did. I got to Chapter 2 or 3 and had to quit. It was a backtracking simulator.

I remember running to one edge of a swamp, only to have it run me back into a location I had passed on my way out

OH GOD IM GETTING FLASHBACKS
