Be lazy regarding the main quest once you get the first shout. Go hunt down daedra shrines and dragonwalls and sidequests for a while so you actually get some exploring done rather than blindly following quest markers everywhere.
Also get the bound swords spell plus the perk that gives them soultrap on hit. You'll thank me later.
