In some ways yes. True friendship isn't based on looks, it's based on character, Many things are based on character but humans have generally always placed value on physical appearance. It's always the first thing you notice about someone and what catches your eye.
Good looks that agree with people make them have a better disposition towards you, which is why it's always important to smile and look non-threatening. I would say often it is taken to great length however, because looks and outward appearances have been given a lot more weight than a person's character but on the other hand.. that's just being human.
I struggle to defend or side with either point, honestly.
