What made WOW awesome when it came out is it wasn't a grindy peice of shit where you had to sit and camp spawns for exp and items. You just did quests, explored the world, and had fun.
Now WOW is -the- grindiest peice of shit out there, where phone book tier 'content' is 90% of the end game where you wait for your daily/weekly allowence of crafting items, and the other 10% is repetitive grinding of the same dungeons for 12+ months.

When it came out the developers had a different mentality.
They just took the world they created, and threw players in it and said: Look here's the outline of a story and progression you guys make it up.
Now they've gone overboard hand-scripting every single thing that happens in the game. What you cast a spell? Better script exactly WHO it can affect, what it does, what it doesn't do, and when you're allowed to use it.
What? A boss appeared, better define where it can exist, what it's exact role and none other is etc.
The game had well defined strengths and weaknesses and it was successful for them.
But they sold out it's strengths... to fix it's weaknesses.. and it ended up medicore at everything.
They basically theme-parked the hell out of it.
Now it feels like a really really really unbelievably shitty version of witcher 3 or something... where there's cutscenes, and attempts at character development that fall flat and all actual mutliplayer in the game is just lip service essentially.

It didn't feel bad because the game had community and complex multiplayer interaction going for it.
They got rid of that though with things like cross realm everything, LFG tools and phasing...
Not sure what they were going for with those changes. Some attempt to casualise it and improve the 'story-telling' aspect of it.
Problem is no one in their right fucking mind was playing WoW for the 'storyline'.
So they basically improved something no one gave a fuck about (and if you compare it to games like the witcher, WoW gets BTFO in terms of quest storyline etc.)... and in order to improve storyline they shitted up what it had going for it: Complex multiplayer interactions.

I tried to have another go at WoW like a week ago, Warlords of Draenor free and all.
Even with the whole char models update, the game still feels incredibly dated graphics wise.
On a related note, I was never a fan of MMOs. I bought ESO like a year ago (most of the problems on release were ddressed by then), played few characters to lvl 25-30 or so and got tired of it.

WoW pvp is as static and mundane as its PvE. And when legion hits and the arenas and BGs change, so will the changes to raiding. They're putting less emphasis on class knowhow and more on learning to dodge and counter boss mechanics, something I'd bet a couple bucks on they got from FFXIVs raiding scene, but I digress.

It was nice how they had this system that wasn't so completely apologetic to folks who couldn't dedicate as much time, but there were small ways like resting that could act as a boost so it wasn't a total loss to stop playing.

The game is just not fun. The only thing potentially neat about legion is the dungeon altering items that change bosses. Challenge dungeons was the best thing in Wod period, because you needed specific items, class comps, and abilities to even beat them. They need more of that.
But honestly after playing wod for about 7 months, I'd rather breathe an exit bag filled with gaben farts than hand metzen more money.

For the past 10 years I have told myself I am done with this game. Since Cata onwards I have quit the game, each time thinking "yeah, this is the final time I quit, I'm not interested". Each fucking time I do that, I come back. It could be months and months later, but I come back. I even managed to not give a fuck about an expansion, for the first time. Then my friend said he was starting, and I got bit again.
The impact this game has had on gaming as a whole is so fucking amazing. There are millions of people out there for whom this was the best game they've ever played. It isn't that game any more, but so many wish it was. I think Blizzard would be fucking crazy to not try and monetise that feeling. That's why I think we'll see Vanilla servers announced during Blizzcon.

What really grinds my gears is you can go to the vendor in IF and grab a competitor's tabard for any alt, regardless of level as long as you already have the feat of strength. I was just listening to the vanilla wow soundtrack the other day and getting incredibly nostalgic. I wish I could go back to those days. Vanilla wow was one of the best experiences of my life. I know that sounds sad but it was. Wish I could go back and live it again. Not just for wow but life for me was simpler back then. Fuck.
I played from release up until end of Lich King. I was pretty sad to hear that they basically destroyed old Azeroth in Cataclysm. All those memories lost forever.

With wow it is a bit different. You can't have the wonder and mystery of diving into morrowind the first time. But you can dive in to old wow and experience that sense of community and growth. That is what every mmo since WoTLK has forgotten about. What made mmos so great and popular was that each server was a community. People had to work together and talk to each other because no one could make it alone. There was too much to do and not enough time even if you were a neet. in 2016 the fastest 1-60 is what, around 90 hours. WoD took 8 hours to get to max level at release. And Legion looks no better. They are just making shallow single player experiences. When you leveled in the older mmo's you built a bond with your character because it took you weeks, months to get to max level.
I enjoyed vanilla, TBC, hell even wrath, but i also accept those are never coming back.
They were hardly technical masterpieces in design, vanilla was a fucking shitshow in terms of balance (some class specs were literally unusable) and bugged out like crazy, but that sense of community won't come back.
Just have to learn to deal with it, still manage to have fun and down the line met new folks to hang out with in-game and do shit.

It's probably quicker getting from 1 to max level now than at any point in the history of WoW considering all the exp buffs and heirloom gear. You can literally just not do quests or ever repeat a dungeon and get straight to 90.
It's the end game that's the problem, I really don't know where you get this view from or how many years its been since you last played WoW. I don't think grindy is something I'd have called the levelling experience since cata hit which was nearly 6 years ago.

Shadow Priests are more lore iconic, I admit. I went from rogue to paladin in WOTLK. They were simplified immensely in that expansion and the ability to do so much more than simply DPS and go invisible just made life so much easier that I've only gone on to play Monk and Warrior, always going back to Paladin in the end.

When it came to Vanilla and leveling general it was fucking grindfest to get to 60 AND the raids themselves were insane grind because no catch-up mechanics whatsoever and having to gear 40+ people.
