The gameplay is fine if you're into older dungeon crawlers. The main problem the game had was with the battles being slow, and the PSP version mostly fixes that by adding the Estoma spell (that lets you avoid encounters) and by putting an option to skip animations in battle if you want.
Other than that, the game has very good characters and story, and also an impressive amount of content. It is very much worth playing.

Most of the time you just download the emulator, download the rom/iso, if it's needed download the require bios files (that's usually the only hard part) and then just run the program, select the game, play.
I mostly play PSX games on my phone/tablet anyway since it's even easier to just drop the game in a folder and play with a bluetooth controller or whatever.
