Nu-Doom got me in the mood to start playing classic arena shooters. What should I buy on Steam? Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament 2004?

There's a Steam sale right now for the UT collection and the Quake series. Is it worth it?
>>
>>342918362
you could try the new UT for free and see if that cures your itch
>>
>>342918915
I will make sure to try it. But I would also like to play the classics. Which Quake and which UT should I get?
>>
>>342919026
unless you want to be a purist. Q2 and UT04 is a good place to start. don't know about current server populations for the games anymore though. you might just have to look that up on your own.
>>
>>342920045
I think I'll try the free UT pre-alpha demo and get Quake Live.
>>
Why would you buy anything? The games are dead.
>>
>>342920045
>Q2
what the fuck is wrong with you
>>
>>342918362
Ut99 and Ut2k4 are both fantastic
>>
>>342918362
>What should I buy on Steam? Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament 2004?

why would you buy 12-16 year old dead multiplayer only games

why would you buy games that old to begin with
>>
>>342920890
Maybe he enjoys purchasing games only after knowing that 0% of the money will actually go to the creators
>>
>>342920890
>>342920878
Okay, what about Quake Live and UT 2014 then? I never played these games before, and stupidly assumed all of them still had some active players

unreal gold
quake 1 and 2
UT games are good vs bots if you just wanna mess around
personally I prefer reflex to quake live but i wouldn't recommend paying for QL if you didn't already get it for free
>inb4 le dead shitposts
>>
UT2k4's servers are only populated with bots and people who have been practicing for 10+ years on like 3 different maps and only in deathmatch. It's not a lot of fun
>>
>>342921152
Just try Quake Live and UT4 and see which one you like better, they're both free so just try both
>>
>>342918362
Quake 3 still holds up incredibly well, UT99 is OK, haven't played any other UTs.
>>
>>342921253
wut level
>>
ut2k4 multiplayer's basically dead at this point, me and a bunch of friends got together and had a fucking blast once but herding 7+ people into a server is impossible. I'd recommend the new UT but I generally am against early access, as you wind up getting burnt out before the game's even released.
>>
>>342921152
the old games do have active players, but you have to decide whether you want to give bethesda money for quake or not. UT is still owned by Epic as it was 17 years ago.
>>
>>342918362
Nu-Doom doesn't resemble a classic arena shooter at all. If you want something like it, play Painkiller or Serious Sam.

If you want classic shooters, it's pretty typical to go for ultimate doom, quake, blood, stuff like that.
>>
quake 1 nigger

>bethesda
Zenimax.

How is it that everyone on this board thinks bethesda owns id, it's mind boggling. Id probably has more staff than bethesda.
>>
>>342921253
Why is that magma so dark?

You're not playing in GLQuake, are you?
>>
>>342921472
Fucking Todd Howard

>>342921475
I already have Painkiller and the old Dooms, I just used Nu-Doom as an example because who knows
>>
>>342921587
Also
>that viewmodel fov
what the actual FUCK
>>
>>342921670
quake doesn't have viewmodel fov.

quake is meant to be played as quake. that's an original setting.
>>
>>342921352
one of the levels from map jam 6
>>
>>342921554
right, sorry, but bethesda is practically synonymous with zenimax at this point
>>
>>342921782
are you playing with fucking fov 130

there is literally no reason to play with fisheye inducing nonsense like that other than to say you're "playing like da real quake pros"
>>
>>342921962
Explain to me how a developer is synonymous with the media conglomerate who owns it. No, really. Please, go on.

Do they share board members? No. Executives? No.

Please tell me how they're "synonymous" in any way other than your own, and most of /v/'s, teenage ignorance.
>>
>>342921475
Shadow warrior classic redux is also pretty good.

>>
>>342922275
No need to be such a cunt, I said practically synonymous, as in: most people think of bethesda and zenimax together. Plenty of people think that bethesda develops all of the games they publish. But I mis-spoke and corrected myself and apologized, so by all means please go off on me some more about how wrong I was.
>>
>>342922851
>Voodoo 5
>ever
if you owned one of these you had absolutely no idea what you were doing whatsoever. One of the worst pieces of consumer computer hardware ever released.

just fyi.
>>
>>342922937
but people being wrong about shit doesn't make things synonymous or practically synonymous. it just means a bunch of people are wrong.

not trying to shit on you senpai im just tired of beth hate, etc anyway

bethesda makes pretty much some of the most fun video games of all time, with heavily open modding, which nobody allows anymore. and people here still shit on them.

yes they're lazy faggots and they never really do any engine work or anything, but at least TES6 is gonna be a new engine after literally 15 fucking years. Holy shit, Todd Howard should really change his name to Schtodd Howiesteinberger

BUY QUAKE 2/QUAKE LIVE, PIRATE QUAKE 1
Here's the link for Quake 1 base files:
https://mega.nz/#!rEQ23RgY!TMS1rXLeOIhs2_SmtOytbhcjPjqBbxj_ZJcRWAwOyKo

Find an engine at:
http://quakeone.com/
>>
>>342923412
nevermind, I was wrong, just search Quake 1 Download and go to the first youtube video you find that says full registered Quake 1
That one has the correct link
>>
>>342923412
why would you buy quake2 and pirate quake1

just pirate them both. nobody from that era works at id software anymore except adrian carmack and he can go fuck himself with a stick
>>
>>342921593
get SS. TFE, TSE, and BFE
>>
>>342918362
I play UT99 everyday because it's the only game that I enjoy now
>>
>>342923680
Because pirating Quake 2 and getting the .exe running is a major pain in the ass, plus OP said he had some money to work with so it's just a hell of a lot easier to buy Quake 2, and pirate Quake 1.
Honestly, I have the same standpoint as you, but it's just way harder to get Q2 pirated and running than it is to pirate Q1.
>>
>>342923680
yeah pirate them both but you are wrong about the second part since adrian hasn't been with id since probably 2005 and tim willits and marty stratton are still there both have been around since at least quake 2
>>
>>342923917
you are wrong it works exactly the same as quake
you can use yagami or q2pro hell even vanilla works just fine
>>
>>342923917
>getting the .exe running is a major pain in the ass

what the fuck are you talking about
why would you use the original executable

you run quake2 in exactly the same way as quake1. you download the resource files and run it with a source port.

how can you be this confused?
>>
>>342924067
oh, i meant kevin cloud. Stratton joined in 1997 but is a business-side guy not involved in development.
>>
>>342923680
Adrian isn't at id, he's working on Romero's game after not being on the grid at all for years.

Have you never played quake before?

>Quake live
(because game modes and mechanics have been changed to make it easier on new players to get in on the fun)
>New Unreal Tournament
(because it's free and you won't won't regret purchasing it if you don't like it.)

Have some experience ?

>Quake Live on the pro modes
(because it still retains the core essence of Q3Arena.)
>Unreal Tournament 2004
(because not as dead as the new unreal tournament and it's plenty challenging)
>Reflex
(because it's modern CPMA, decent player base, and very competitive)

Until Quake Champions we don't really have a game that's very populated and easy to break into since only very experienced people play these old games and you get your shit wrecked quick if you don't have the experience.
>>
>>342921276
Quake live isn't free anymore, they made it $10 if you can believe that
