The fact that this game took off away faster than Persona 4 was EXTREMELY pleasing. Plus the text messages are actually pretty cute and add extra personality to every character. This is what vidya has done for literally generations, as early as the NES when the dialogue, backgrounds, and even sprites were heavily edited to be more appealing. You're just noticing now that when they translate a script, it's usually easier to re-write it entirely and just try to get the jist together, because it's easier than it ever has been to see what the original script actually was.

It gets even MORE complicated when people bring in the "Original Artistic vision!" argument, because the game was actually designed from the ground up to accomodate for the localization changes made, meaning the "artistic vision" for this game included the possibility of changes for the sake of cultural differences.
And it's not just a case of "Well, Nintendo could just change anything they wanted to, just change around some files!", either. That kind of thing takes contientious effort on the part of the developer. If you wan to see a game where translation and localization never entered into the development process, look at Mother 3. That shit was never getting officially localized from the start, and the game's own internal programming relfects that. The unofficial translation had to create MASSIVE workarounds to make it happen.

Nintendo at least is notorious for the amount of contempt they have for their customers. Every single game company is like this, of course, but Nintendo is above and beyond. No amount of message sending would actually amount to anything, so why not just solve the problem for each individual?
