Stick with the main games because the spinoffs are all garbage.
The only problem with the re-releases (re;birth) is that they all use the mechanics used from the 3rd mainline game. While it's the most refined, playing them back to back is going to feel like a huge drag.
If you just want to try ONE game, then you might as well wait for V2, which is going to release soon. Best gameplay of the main games so far.
Are any of the Re;Birth games any good? All three are 80%+ off now.

What these guys said. Megadimension Neptunia V-II is miles ahead of any of the previous games. Nick D. wasn't involved and it shows, the writing is actually great. The gameplay and soundtrack is far better than any other game in the series. Comes July 5th on PC.

I like Rebirth 2 the most since it has Red and Linda early on in the story.
All 3 Rebirth games play the same so people's preferences are with the game whose story they liked the most.
Rebirth 1 has a slow pace but does a good job of introducing the series' setting and characters.
Rebirth 2 isn't connected to Rebirth 1's story but replaces Neptune with Nepgear as the protagonist and has a story centered around the much cuter goddess candidates.
By Rebirth 3 Neptune is the protagonist again but now the goddesses are on good terms with each other so they instead team up against a common evil.
Storywise I prefer 2, 1, and then 3.
