It's actually not a meme. It's quite good. It just needs some good games.

>Why do you always fall into this flawed shitty logic? One technology failed, now every single technology ever will also fail?

You're being purposefully thick, throwing all "technologies" into the same bucket. VR and motion controls are fairly similar in their aims, new methods to interact with the game world, in which, yes you can easily compare the two. Basically you're asking people to fork over 400-800 dollars for an potentially uncomfortable box you strap to your face that can make you sick and unable to play for long periods of time. Even reduce the cost by half and that's alot to ask of people.

>>342889606

Blu-Ray is a strait up improvement over VCR/DVD, VR is a completely new paradigm that is very different from traditional displays. VR potentially large disadvantages while DVD's/Blu Rays had few

You're sound more like a shill by the second. And note i said "potentially uncomfortable" for a reason.

Strapping a VR headset to your face is by definition more unconformable that looking at your television, and we're talking about wearing these things for hours playing video games.
>>
>>342890335
> VR and motion controls are fairly similar in their aims, new methods to interact with the game world, in which, yes you can easily compare the two

Okay then, I'll narrow what I said

Past "new methods to interact with the game world" have failed, now every single "new methods to interact with the game world" will fail? Great logic.

> Even reduce the cost by half and that's alot to ask of people.

Apparently not, according to sales figures

Which won't be anytime soon. Thanks, Shitendo.
>>
>>342891230
If he's sounding like a shill, then you're sounding like a troll. You aren't actually highlighting problems that VR has, you're highlighting potential problems that it possibly could have (but doesn't). You can do the exact same thing with literally every technology. If you base your arguments around people's actual experiences with the product instead of your imagined flaws with it then you'd have more credence.
>>
>>342891230
That's a baseless hypothetical.
These things are not particularly heavy and the straps are engineered to distribute the weight so they are not uncomfortable at all.

VR is nothing like motion controls. It's more like a new resolution level that makes games look better and become wayyy more immersive. The only disadvantages are the set-up time (which for anyone who's tried it will find spending an hour one time worthwhile for the vive, or less for the oculus), the lack of content, and the cost of entry (both of which will be fixed over time).

have you tied VR yet?

It's sold enough in the two weeks of early access to cover about a quarter of dev costs for the next year. It's not a failed product, anon.

There are almost 100,000 headsets currently in consumer hands. (I can guarantee at least 80,000, as of a few weeks ago) - for an $800 product that requires a $1000 PC, that's pretty damn impressive.
>>
I don't consider it failed tech, but I do consider it unnecessary (used the dev kits for the past 2 years). There still isn't really anything resembling what is described in Snow Crash/Neuromancer, and the amount effort pushed towards these feature is minimal at best. Mostly just games and porn.

I don't want to play any games on the thing, there are barely any development teams I trust anymore (or buy from for that matter). Porn is pretty pointless as that requires me to give a shit about sex and so on.

very easy to see it as a gimmick.

That's initially what I though, but yeah, it has to be compatible with VR for it not to fuck your PC to pieces with how many times it renders the damn game.
Can play Project cars like a dream, can't play the new HITMAN if my life depended on it.

It is a lot more of a hassle, you retard. You don't have your headphones attached to your head. You don't have to position them carefully over your eyes. You can do other things without having to pause the game and either turn on the outside camera or remove the damn thing altogether. It is a huge pain in the ass.
>>
>>342894824
I don't understand why you think this? It's sold nearly 100,000 and it hasn't even been a full year in release. That's outstanding. Not only that, but it's gaining momentum. Tons of AAA companies are starting to deeply look into it.

Not just the Vive, but VR in general. The Gear might be dumb but has sold over a million units now. And it's just a light introduction to VR.

Although I don't agree with it, I feel that PSVR will be the one to REALLY take off and sell the first million over the Vive, despite the Vive being the superior product, just because it is more expensive.
>>
>>342894425

What? You think they invented some new never before seen type of display unit for VR? It beams it directly to your brain?

Dude, it's two monitors, some motion detection equipment and some software to run it all, same as it was back then. Nothing new.

You don't have to worry about sunlight obscuring the TV, or people blocking the way when they walk in front of it. Plus, it frees up the TV for someone else to use as well. Not only that, it lets you play in situations where using the TV isn't an option, like you're in a hotel room and can't access the TV's ports or the TV is broken.

But you can't play any kind of FPS on it, and you can only play certain kinds of 3d platrofmers. You can only play first-person roomscale games, which limits you to shooting galleries, and third-person games need limited degrees of freedom on the non-tracked camera movement. That's kind of the point of my objection, there's really serious limitations to the technology that people just seem to gloss over because they're in the honeymoon phase.

I feel like people making these analogies don't know anything about the technologies they're talking about. The internet was developed for military communications, and it was fantastic for that purpose. Its next chief role was allowing researchers to easily communicate, in particular, to communicate about the future design of the internet. Then it moved on to allowing university faculty and students to communicate. All this was decades before the world wide web, which is what people who make poor analogies think the internet is.

Computers were originally designed by mathematicians who wanted a way of approaching problems that were intractable in the early 20th century. This reached its greatest prominence with cryptography in World War II. From there, they became usable for storing and manipulating data, which made them slowly replace filing systems, and also gave them the role of aggregating data and generating reports. This gave them an increasing role in document preparation. And so on.

The original (consumer) mobile phones were car phones, that needed a specially-mounted antenna to get a strong enough signal. Even these devices were incredibly useful for businessmen who wanted to be able to stay in touch while traveling. People may have made fun of the bulkiness of brick phones, but that doesn't mean they weren't incredibly useful.

This is to say, as other people have said, all these things were useful right from the start. Simply asserting that something is "like computers in some imagined ways" doesn't make that thing useful from the start.

Is there a way to try this vr shit out before I make a decision on purchasing it?
