I'm playing through RE4 again because it's only 7 bucks on the steam sale and I've run into this dilemma. On console the semi-auto was a clear choice because it was better to have more shots when you're aiming with an analogue stick, but now that I have a mouse I'm reconsidering the firepower of the standard bolt action.
Which should I take? I just started the castle section and I've been using the Red9, standard unupgraded shotty(waiting for striker) and the TMP.

I hope you know the trick with getting free ammo when upgrading your magazine, so I suggest you taking the auto at one point because of the free bullets.
also you need it anyway for the Regeneradors

I've always gone through the game with the bolt action on console. No idea why you have problems with it. Literally the highest damage output close enough to any of the mags, 20 rounds, fast reload, and can wreck any enemy with one shot to the head and any mini bosses as well.
There's an equivalent weapon in The evil within and it's literally the same ass kicking weapon.

My version of the game had a completely broken upgrade for the rifle that boosted the firepower to 30. You don't even need the scope to kill the regeneradores with that.
I've never used any rifle but bolt action, that sexy reload is not worth giving up. And it's easy as fuck to aim even with analogue stick.
Honestly you don't need to do any minmaxing faggotry while playing RE4, just pick whichever gun you think looks coolest and use that.

I've played a lot of RE4 and I feel the Riot is simply better due to the way Leon aims with them as it allows for multiple headshots on a group of enemies, the Striker is a bit more limited in that regard.
IIRC Riot is also faster overall.
