Yes and no. He tries to inject socio-political commentary in his games but instead of presenting it through gameplay he just makes the characters speak high-school level political essays to each other. That's not necessarily by definition pretentious.

He tried to do the opposite in MGSV, less exposition, less clarity, more cutscenes where people talk less, but it backfired and became the shittiest metal gear plot-- the game's cut content and lack of any real ending made him essentially dump the game's pretentious aspirations into the audio logs.

I'm interested in death stranding, as it's his first non mgs title in years, but I'm not going to give it too much mind until we see some actual gameplay
