I have no idea why current day /v/ is so blindly cynical about HL2 and the episodes. It's not like you have to war one against the other. You should appreciate both. Half Life 2 has just aged badly, it's a simple fact. It was a good game at the time, and hell still honestly looks pretty good, but it's gameplay is dated and doesn't have the same visceral feel of the first.
>>
>>342853993
>>342854163
It gets really silly and action-y, especially at the final boss. Much weaker than the first episode but it's a fine ending to the series.

They're still hugely influential, its just no one remembers them. HL2 set the ground works for the modern set piece driven campaign, unfortunately modern devs forgot that you need to make the set pieces actually playable.

I like it when games go off the deep end at the last part. It's the most cliche'd thing ever but I love it when a jrpg about swords and shit ends with you in some sort of sky fortress built by ancient aztecs who were actually from space.

HL1 and 2 were cinematic experiences in a way that no other games since have been. People harp about TLOU all the time but HL1 was literally a video game movie that you could interact with, and was a killer FPS to boot.

2 legitimately lost touch with everything that made 1 great. Sign of the times, and my #1 reason why I don't want a Half Life 3.

Is Half Life 2 a bad game? No. But if you were alive in the 90s to experience the game fresh for yourself with the mental capacity to understand the world around you, it was such a better game in that context than what Half Life 2 ended up being for early -mid 2000s. 1 was kind of like Deus Ex. They both capture that feeling, those vibes. They feel like there's genuine atmosphere to them, like you once were there at the various locations or like you could visit them if you searched. I never got those feelings from 2, ever.
>>
>>342854328
Aside from the puzzles, how exactly is the gameplay dated?
It's just a tried and true derivative of Quake's mechanics and engine, without being bogged down by some of the modern trappings.
>>
>>342854536
Yeah, there are notes all over the game and you have to piece them together to get the code to open the door. Some of them are in maps where you're already locked to a different ending.
I just noclipped through the door.

But that's wrong. I don't know what source port you played, but in Dos Quake you have to press the run button to actually run.

I've attached a webm. Starting run is made at default speed until nearly the end of the 3rd episode hall. Running back I used the Run button. The speed differences are apparent.

HL1 was the game that "set the ground works for the modern set piece driven campaign". HL2 was the same shit with a lot more cutscenes and forced character interaction, i.e. a lot worse.

>>342854750

I liked the bosses in new Doom. Serious Sam has a few fun ones.

>without being bogged down by some of the modern trappings.
Except for all those long ass cutscenes you can't skip. And long ass boat scenes. And long ass driving sequences. It's a big physics demonstration. An impressive physics demonstration sure, but it honestly kills any drive to play it years later because I honestly can't be fucked with those areas.
Half Life is fun to load up today because it has pure focus on shooting and good level design facilitating shooting. Half Life 2 bogs it's mechanics down with too much other shit to make as fun to play years later.

Honest answer here. If you've played half life 2. After you play this you'll think half life 2 is shit compared to the masterpiece you've just installed on your pc. There are somd very confusing parts. If you like really fast paced shooters you'll love this. You move so fuckin quick. Sanic sped
>>
>>342854156

>>
>>342854869

I never felt anything in those sections. Or any section in 2 honestly. The game feels too estranged from everything human. It's not like in 1 where it was believable locations, people and time. What year did 2 take place do you know? Does it have any concept of time? No. It's just this odd surreal experience. I am genuinely not a fan.

It's pretty hard to go wrong. Just look HL2 up on moddb and list everything by popularity/rating.
Planetphillip is another good place to look. They also do pretty regular mapping contests so there's always something new to play.

Don't get me wrong, I like HL2, I just think it's inferior to HL1 in almost every way. Less enemy variety, less weapon variety, spends way too much time shoving the story down your throat, and their attempts to make the game look as realistic as possible really make it feel old.
>>
>>342855434
>Fuck off, the driving was great. Highway 17 is one of the most atmospheric levels in vidya history.
And it's agreed by nearly everyone that it goes on for too long. Driving is not nearly as fun as shooting. It's half decent for a break in action but it outstays its welcome fast.
>>

>>342854994
the bad part about driving sections isn't the driving itself, its that you get off the fucking boat every 3 minutes to get another retarded ass bullshit obstacle out of the way instead of enjoying it then being done with it
>>
>>342855483

It took place about 20 years after 1. They tell you that explicitly. Also genuinely what the fuck are you talking about? HL2 had tons of little details in its environments that made them feel lived in and real, the original had inexplicable architecture out the ass.
>>
>>342854976
It didn't have to be a HL1 remake, it just had to be more game and less novelty attraction.

>>
>>342855759

Its interrupted very regularly though, and its a nice change of pace. I feel like people who complain about those sections don't actually remember them right, the hoverboat section is under 50% driving and the car is even less than that.
>>
>>342855602
Does this even apply anymore? I mean shit there's tons of pixel art games out nowadays. And even low poly is gaining some traction too (and it should really hurry up because I need it). I don't think anyone gets turned down by graphics anymore.

>>

>they're great the first time around

Not for me they weren't.

Their attempts to make the characters "likable" fell completely flat, they were just long sequences of unfunny dialogue.

Think about how long it takes before the actual gameplay of Half Life 2 starts. I mean the real gameplay, not the just walking from one scripted cutscene to the next that is the entirety opening. It has to be something close to half an hour, at least. Other games get crucified for that sort of crap and yet Half Life 2 is proclaimed one of the greatest games of all time.

Did you miss that part of 1 where you start with a 10 minute tram ride?

Also games get crucified for that shit if you have no control, HL2 gives you control from the get go. Walking around City 17 at the start is one of my favorite levels just because you can walk around. Same deal with the lab section of Half Life.

>>
>>342856534
There were only a few moments like that in HL1 that I remember. The tram ride, waiting to get into the test chamber, that one scientist stopping you in the freezer, getting dragged by the soldiers, and the ending with G-Man. And none of those even come close to how much time HL2 spends on cutscenes. If you pay attention to HL2 speedruns you'll notice they shaved like an hour off the time when they found out how to skip cutscenes.
>>
>>342856534
the tram ride and everything until fucking unforseen consequences is a giant cutscene where you don't have any agency other than spamming E and nuking someone's chicken.
