Most people probably wouldn't have a problem with alternate characters and a slightly more involved story if it was done well, but Sega is too stupid to realize that so they just cut both entirely.

sonic gave him a cola and egg and ovi kintobor accidentally split it on the machine use to rid away the evil from the chaos emeralds (he need a silver emerald to complete it) and mobius. Rings went everywhere and the evilness went into the doctor along with the egg's traits infusing him (it's rotteness and shape) becoming Eggman/Ovi Robotnik
