NOLF2 was a fine game but it didn't have as much of the first game's charm. Not really sure why. The systems at play in the game are all vastly improved over the first and yet the end result feels a little soulless compared to the original.

And Xenogears will remain as so. I haven't found a game with the story of this caliber yet. Except PST, but that was a little different.

Suikoden is good, definitely in my top list, but it explores different themes and not as deep as Xenogears, I think.

Disc 2 is like, the size of the Kislev chapter but has barely any shitty, annoying dungeons. If you could deal with Rico's subplot, the Thames and fucking Babel Tower, Disc 2 is worth it just for closure and being less annoying.

>>342840293
There's nothing wrong with saying it's your favorite, but there are plenty of games with better writing. Like shit, play some adventure games like Grim Fandango or some good VNs. Not many games get as ass-deep into theology, but the overall writing quality of the game isn't that great. It has serious pacing issues, several characters that are flatter than a plank of wood, and the twists are generally shown anime level.

You know, even a year or two ago I'd have laughed and said that NOLF will show up as soon as Grim Fandango and Descent come back.

And Grim Fandango got ported and goddammit someone is making Descent again. So who knows!
>>
>>342840748
Games that have multiply characters in it will always suffer more or less from the lack of developing them.

Xenogears was primarily the story of Fei and Elly, both of them got tremedous development during the story.

VNs and adventure games focus more on a single character, though.

Examples of bad pacing please.
>>
>>342840647

>and not as deep
There's your problem anon. You're like the people who think Eva is the best anime, overlooking how you had more actual enjoyment watching something like Sailor Moon because you think things have to be 'deep' to be well written.
>>
>>342840878
And a lot of elements of how Gear battles are presented are ripped straight from G Gundam.

Like, let's be real: Fei is a Domon ripoff with some elements cribbed from Shinji. That's not a bad thing, but the game isn't as inspired as people give it credit for. It was still important for introducing a certain level of writing back into mainstream console games alongside stuff like Legacy of Kain, but it's not amazing.
>>
>>342841153
Anon, I haven't watched Eva.

Describing deep for me is not actually being pretentous, but incorporating philosophy teachings into the plot, so it flows well. Xenogears does it good.
>>
>>342841357

>Anon, I haven't watched Eva.

Your favorite game is usually a product of circumstance, playing them at the right place and at the right time/age.

MGS2 is my favorite game and I could easily explain that I loved it because I was at a proper time in my life to really enjoy it (teenager). I can easily concede that 1 and 3 are technically way better and yet I managed to enjoy 2 the most.

>Games that have multiply characters in it will always suffer more or less from the lack of developing them.
Not on this level. Rico, Maria and Chuchu barely qualify as characters. The Tales games both before and after Xenogears do a better job fleshing out and justifying their parties, and most of those games are pretty poorly written.

>Xenogears was primarily the story of Fei and Elly, both of them got tremedous development during the story.
And yet Elly takes a huge backseat to creator's pets like Citan and Ramsus (both of whom essentially return in Xenosaga in roles that only really work if you just assume they're second attempts at those characters). And despite the plot CONSTANTLY trying to find reasons to shove Elly out of the party because the side stories take precedence over her development.

>VNs and adventure games focus more on a single character, though.
Some of them do. Others, like 999, present a better and more fleshed out ensemble that have depth and are developed in a less simple, linear fashion.

>Examples of bad pacing please.
Most of the dialogue being long-winded and extremely redundant.
Spending HOURS on subplots that don't fucking matter or entertain while skipping huge chunks of the core narrative.
Placing importance on exploring the Thames while skipping almost every instance of Elly's Immigration existing.
The entire Kislev chapter, as the game would flow better if there was a more immediate link between It's first big appearance and Fei and Elly stranded in the ocean.
Disc 2.

It's not just budget, it was poor planning.

this game was the shit
>>
>>342842201
Chu-Chu was a mascot. Maria and Rico, I agree. They had some portion of development, but could have been flashed out more.

I don't really remember this. When was plot trying to shove her out? Every important scene has her. Even when you are going to Zeboim there is a development for her too. AND it's optional.

Still need to play 999 and other in this series. But I can argue that this is a VN, thus it sacrifices gameplay for characters and story.

Game examples of this happening? I can agree that some dialogues were pretty long and tiresome, but they were still important to overall lore of the game. Also, subplots?

Elly's gear should have been more important on Disc two, I think, but...

Kislev chapter serves as intoduction to actual Kislev and characters like Kaiser and Rico. It COULD be done better but taking it from the narrative would be worse. Also it explains the subplot about Elly and Weltall from the beginning.

I'm not that autistic with cycle accurate emulation. As long as it's playable it's alright in my book
>>
>>342843272
Yeah you'll be able to play it. But save often and don't be surprised/pissed if something goes awry.
>>
>>342842848
I really don't know where is this coming from. I tinkered only two games among 40-60 I emulated, being Xenosaga and AT for resolution.

Fucking Dolphin requires far more tinkering than PS2 emulation.
>>
>>342843375
I think issues are being conflated here.

The emulation does work, though it isn't perfect. I think a lot of the rancor surrounding PS2 emulation is that despite having operable emulators for over a decade now, forward progress in terms of reliability and accurate emulation more or less stalled in the mid 2000s.

It isn't a hardware issue, it's a software issue. Reverse engineering the PS2 even with space-age technology is not as easy as many people want it to be.

You best not be saying that you don't like Majora's mask tho.
>>

I didn't like the repeating time mechanic, no. I also think Majora's Mask introduced two of the three things that made Zelda go downhill. Endless NPC fetch quests and a linear story.

Come on, Minish Cap is adorable and used a lot of its resources greatly. Sure unlocking shit with luck stones could get annoying, but everything else was good.

Compared to the games before, yes. But it has a lot more open periods than the games that came after. Including Majroas Mask.
