It's hard to say. Each series has really solid games. Just avoid Disciples III, that game was dog shit. If you like HoMM, you'd definitely like Age of Wonders and Disciples.

Lot's of units. Lot's of spells and abilities to play around with.
You can build in 3 ways: might, army size, magic.I don't ever see a reason to go anything than magic because see below
Also, I think this game has the most ways to cheese out fights using units, abilities, spells and game mechanics I've ever seen in a single game.
It does get somewhat old if you play all the games in a row because they are basically copies with different maps and a couple new units.

Are all of the modern Kings Bounty games good? I played the first when it came out and I liked it, but barely remember it now.

Take the IP off Ubisoft and give it to a studio who actually respects it. Since that's not going to happen, the second best thing you can do is make a Not-Heroes series.
