What the fuck man I just bought this game on the Steam sale and it's busting my balls. I can't even get out of the first set of mine levels. How do I git gud at this game?
Use bombs sparingly, you will need them to access blocked off mine shafts that contain treasures and/or the damsel in distress.
Choose the path of least resistance. No need to carelessly go down a path full of enemies and one-way detours, always find a path that you can easily climb back up.
On the event that you do need to get back up, use your ropes. Use these wisely.
Get money, get paid. You need as much money as you can. If you've found the exit and the damsel in distress is safely escorted, then go backtrack for more money if you have the time.
Spend too much time and the ghost will appear and try to instakill you. He's very slow, and he can be used to get more money (any gems he touches turns to diamonds).
If you can get a jetpack + shotgun combo, then you're good to go.

Spend maximum possible amount of time in each level
Get ALL the money you can. Don't worry about splurging in shops, especially when it comes to bombs and mobility items. The money is there to spend it.
Try to ALWAYS carry an item when in mines to trigger traps.
Using 1 rope or 1 bomb to get to a crate worth it 99% of the time. Using 2 items too if you're desperate.
Always buy climbing gloves if you can, they will pay for themselves almost immediately
Buy as many bombs as you can, especially if you can get to later levels more consistently, having a lot of bombs will allow you to easily get out of sticky situations. (a lot of bombs means two-three dozens in mines)
Speaking of sticky, always kill the big spider by throwing a bomb into the webs under him. He will drop sticky stuff which is invaluable.
Always ALWAYS look down before going down
Get the eye thing from the locked chest if you can, it will reveal crystals in the level. If you get the mattick later, you can earn a lot of money by just digging for crystals. Snake pit level is the best - there is a mattick hidden at the bottom of the pit, and you can usually get the eye shortly before/after, or right at that level, often even in the pit itself.
Spring shoes are good. Spike shoes too. Cape is awesome, I personally prefer it to jetpack (jetpack just allows for too much room for error imo). Cape and climbing gloves is my personal go-to combination.
Don't get hung up on carrying weapons, whip and enough bombs is all you need really.
Dropping of two damsels at the altars will give you a really good item.
Lastly, accept that a successful Spelunky run necessitates KNOWLEDGE. It will take you a very long time to play the game efficiently and reach certain goals if you play blind. THe game has a shit ton of non-obvious mechanics and mechanisms. Wikis/playthroughs are recommended to learn how the game works and what it allows you to do.

It was a fun game to be sure, but we were all really tired of it after all that.
Definitely try to conserve your bombs and ropes where possible. Try to trigger traps with enemy corpses or anything you can throw. Don't stay in the levels too long of you greatly increase the chance of the next level being a dark one.
There's honestly a lot to the game and a high skill ceiling, but its really fun. Just take your time because there is so much to learn and so many secrets.

Actually, it's that if you finish the level quickly enough then there's no chance that the next one is a dark level. I think it's for speedrunners. Once you pass the point where it's possible to get one then there's no increased chance for staying longer.
I love this game but I'll never forgive the dark levels. It's pure RNG and a huge fuck you to players.
