I played some Minecraft Alpha a couple days ago, and I realized how much I disliked beds.
It's an early-game item that allows you to not only change your spawn point, but also skip nights. The fear of having to stay inside during the night is gone once you get one of these things. Like I said, all you need is wool and wood, so you can get it pretty early on.
If anything, I think that changing your spawn point should be a late game feature.
