I don't normally have a problem with antagonists doing this, but after finding out that Zidane is supposed to be more powerful than Kuja, who can bust planets, it feels a little absurd how easily Beatrix shits on him in retrospect.

She was either quitting her position, leaving Alexandria and permanently giving up her former life or killing herself in repentance. Narratively speaking these are very similar and adhering to one vs the other hardly changes anything.

The entire game, she's been wanting to leave Alexandria because of the Queen's sudden Face Heel Turn before the game started. The entire time, she's been thinking about Steiner's blind loyalty and his ignorant bliss. Pretty much, she's been taking a lot of flak for her treatment by Brahne. It took her death to finally snap out of it, and felt she didn't deserve to face the princess after all she did to her and her kingdom. Do you think she'd suicide for all of that? Maybe, I mean, it is a Japanese game, and sudoku is the honorable way to go. But Steiner, who also had his own point of view about Beatrix's dilemma, helped Beatrix reconsider her decision. They both needed their contrasting views to clash and solve each other.
Honestly, FF9 just have the best story in the original decalogy. At least, part of the top 5
