The new System Shock remake looks way better though.
>>
>>342776357
well I do happen to know a little bit about rendering technology
quake was the first game with fully perspective-corrected texturized polygonal 3d environments that Im aware of; everything since has been refinements of that formula
that nowadays textures are used to generate a lot of additional effects besides a plain structural "wallpaper" texture plus a prebaked lightmap doesnt change the fact that this is just a refinement
that all the rendering is nowadays performed by specialized (gpu) hardware instead of a general-purpose cpu is just a difference of implementation

Call of Chernobyl is based on Call of Pripyat's engine, which came out in 2009. Though the engine is just an updated engine of SoC's engine, which was 2007, but it had been in development much longer and was initially supposed to come out in 2003.
>>
>>342776604
Brofist bro, I fucking love me some Skyrim too!
>>
>>342776802

Not by much. But I'm usually against remakes so that might just be me. I don't see why they're remaking SS1 when the enhanced edition is perfectly fine. I don't get the obsession people have these days and wanting old games remade. Can people seriously not put aside dated graphics and just enjoy older games?
>>
>>342776270
i liked when arx fatalis was the spiritual successor more
>>
>>342777078
They're trying to get more people into the series for SS3 is my guess.
>>
>>342776737
I guess if you look at "fully perspective-corrected texturized polygonal 3D environment" as the base for every other 3D game ever then that makes sense but there have been tons of large leaps in graphics since then. Real time lighting, shadow volumes, shadow maps, deferred rendering, among others.

>>342776909
Call of Chernobyl is basically a mod for Call of Pripyat. It's using a modified version of CoP's engine that leaked a few years back. But CoP's engine is just an updated SoC engine, it's not an entirely new engine. And while SoC came out in 2007 it was originally meant to come out in 2003, so that engine is pretty old just with some updates to it since, kind of like how Valve has updated Source since 2004, though I don't know to what extent they updated it so it could be closer to a new engine.

It's probably using Clear Sky's versions of SoC's maps since they share a lot of them and CS's look better.
>>
>>342776909
This. Someone please explain.

right, as I was saying, incremental improvements and diminishing returns
>>
>>342778708
You could say it was whatever game was the first truly 3D game and that Quake just did incremental improvements in adding textures and having more things be modeled rather than sprites.
>>
>>342777860
Just wait until you realize how much better SS1 is than 2.
>>
>>342779048
thats true to a degree but the first fully 3d games didnt really have much in the term of "environments" to speak of, they were typically space sims or flight sims or the like which I think kind of disqualifies them. quake was to a degree the first fully realized 3d "world"
>>
>>342779048
also using sprites would have made it not fully 3d so something like doom wouldnt count even if the environments were fully 3d (which they were not)
>>
>>342779205
Pretty sure System Shock and the game that used the same engine before it were 3D but they still used sprites for everything. As opposed to Doom which was 2D made to look 3D.

>>342779356
Why wouldn't it count? The world and movement is 3D in the games I mentioned above and they even have some 3D objects.
>>
>>342779545
System Shock 1 definitely had some real 3D going on, but from what I remember Ultima Underworld wasn't. You could look up and down with no warp in Shock 1 where in Underworld it would.
>>
>>342779545
imho having a fully realized 3d environment with 3d objects is where the fundamental paradigm shift happened>>342779545

System Shock had some 3D objects but also a lot of sprites. I'm just thinking about your "incremental upgrades" idea and it seems like just adding more 3D models would be an incremental upgrade over whichever game was the first to be actual 3D.

>>342784573
Doom's engine was deliberately somewhat "un-advanced", taking render speed over fancy features, implementing just what would be needed to make the kind of levels they wanted (so Doom has its sector brightness and varied floor heights and support for non-perpendicular walls, all of which massively improved the way levels could be designed in an FPS, but the features are there to be more utilitarian than aesthetic).
IIRC, I remember reading that Carmack was going to put slopes into Doom at some point and didn't for speed reasons.
Keep in mind that Ultima Underworld runs a lot more slowly than Doom does on a machine of the era, too. It's playable, but it's not quick enough for a fast-action game like Doom.

also, even though Doom doesn't have true-3D map layout (which made it much easier to design maps, since you could plan them out in a top-down editor or a piece of paper), it has enough data for more full-3D calculations than it does in-game (there's no technical reason other than laziness that two things can't stand on top of each other, Doom objects do have heights -- it simplifies the logic, but not enough to really be a major speed gain)
probably didn't come up that much because early versions of Doom had a bug regarding large height differences and Doom 1 maps aren't terribly tall at all, so you rarely ended up way above an enemy where it having effectively infinite vertical height really mattered

Videogames are expensive to make, and if you want to do simple things like coding, you gotta hire a couple really good coders, or an army of less good ones.

So rather than make crisis shock XXV, they're taking a classic and 'making it modern, dawg!' They get an almost instant success.

I hate it, and I want it to stop. Even call of duty isn't immune to remakes now.

This is a 1998 PC videogame.

It was literally and for real made on a custom engine developed for many years in one of the dev's parents' garage.

In 2016, we're not allowed to have mirrors in games, let alone portals that teleport your missiles. That was such a meme there for a bit, I think they made a meme videogame out of the concept, but it didn't have mirrors, so it's still inferior.

Portal and Portal 2 have those portal things though. And plenty of games have mirrors and reflections

Rendering tech is different than it was in 1998 so you can't do things the same way you used to be able to do them. That and most devs don't think portals or mirrors are necessary and so don't bother implementing them.

Well, you see, to make pixel art, that's like any other art. It takes a lot of work and effort if you want it to look good, but these are sprites that are supposed to be essentially in constant motion, so you must be really fucking good to do it correctly.

Here is SNK's own summary.

It's easier for them to make a 3D model and trace it than to actually draw something.

>>342795689

This is a shit excuse.

SNK was originally like 10 guys. They never had problems making great looking games, or even the first ever yearly installment of a videogame series.

The original guilty gear was made by 12 people. They did all the voices, the sprites, the music, wrote the lore, drew the art for the manual, and decided that the secret boss should be Kenshin with tits.

Years later, another similarily sized team would do it all over by creating guilty gear Xrd.

How many people worked on good indie games like Freedom planet? Not a whole lot.

It's almost like making videogames takes a certain skillset, but the average indie dev doesn't know this. They just want to shit out their horrible pixel art fuck fests and make easy money.

Regardless, going into sprites is a fool's errand. You're not gonna be able to compete with ancient japanese masters or french specialists. Just make shitty 3d models instead. It's less pathetic when you get compared to something like the latest call of duty, rather than master crafted metal slug sprites.

Those details, shading and touches they add to the final sprites which they draw on top of the reference images could have been put to the 3D model itself and tweak the renderer a bit so that you could simply just render the model and it would end up looking like the final product.

What a giant waste of time and effort.

There's no way they had 50 developers back in 1994. 50+ total employees, sure, but that includes all the service people for their hardware business.

Metal slug and their beat 'em up games were made by specific internal teams under ur-veteran supervision. I don't think KOF was any different. They probably pulled a guy from this team, one from that team, a sprite artist here, got a composer there, and that was it. You're now team KOF! Find a way to merge all these franchises into one. “Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.

It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.

Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own).

You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.

The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.

Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.
