>>
>>342753341

MGS2 tells people a lot of shit they didn't hear because they didn't listen:

>why did Fortune deflect the missiles if her gadget was turned off

People were too stupid for MGS2, that's why from Solidus, we eventually got Skull Face.

Well done! You've incidentally stumbled onto one of the main themes of the game!

Think about this, how do you even know which conversations with Rose were really her and which were the AI spurring you on, pretty spooky right?

Gamers are used to doing as they are told and this game examines that relationship, even though Bioshock took all the credit for doing it before MGS2?

I think it did a swell job. It cut the crap with MGS2 and explained the stuff that needed to be explained (like the Patriots, hated how MGS3 got dragged into that shitty plot element) and made Raiden better in the process

I know this happened before you were born but every MGS fanboy under the sun minus a handful of reasonable ones hated MGS2 because of the Raiden plot twist. Before its release the marketing for the game emphasized Snake to the extent that everyone thought you'd be playing as him again and Raiden, on the rare occasion he was even mentioned in the marketing, was thought to be a minor NPC. The twist was only spoiled in Europe because it took half a year for them to get the game after the US and (after a couple weeks) Japan did.
>>
>>342761094
>Everyone sucked it's dick because it was the new mgs.

but also complained about it. The fanbase just dismissed the complaints by generalizing them as "muh Snake" and never gave them a second thought
>>

I'm so fucking mad, I fucking hate vamp so much he is such a motherfucker and Naomi is a dumb bitch who deserved her cancer or w/e was wrong with her. So goddamn mad.
>>
>>342760770

MGS5's plot is fucking retarded, it served no greater purpose, no interesting message like Raiden did.

And it exposed the idiots who hated Raiden even more and they don't know it, turns out if it looks like Big Boss, sounds (lol) like Big Boss and acts like Big Boss but isn't actually Big Boss....it's still okay because it still 'works'.

So while people hated MGS2 because Raiden was effeminate and whiny, it's OK being a random medic on BB helicopter, butm ade to be his decoy, and having none of the original's achievments, and subsequently all of Venom's achievments and developments mattered absolutely nothing to Big Boss' overall arc.
>>
>>342761787

I hold my hands up to hating MGS2 for being so weird, 'un-metal gear' and Raiden.

Then a few years later the MGS2 HD Collection made me appreciate it more.
>>
>>342762402
>it's OK being a random medic on BB helicopter, butm ade to be his decoy, and having none of the original's achievments, and subsequently all of Venom's achievments and developments mattered absolutely nothing to Big Boss' overall arc.

because everyone treated Venom like he was Big Boss. There really wasn't that much info to cast doubt.

On the other hand MGS2 treated Raiden like a damn rookie and a joke while they treated Snake (aka Pliskin) with respect
>>
>>342762739
And then Raiden destroyed 25 Metal Gear Rays and killed the best Snake.

I know where you are coming from, compared to SS it's laughable that Raiden was trained by VIDEO GAMES, but he proved himself at the end.
>>
>>342762739

How does that excuse anything? MGS isn't supposed to be your personal action hero fantasy. That's literally one of the things MGS2 was trying to say.

It's funny how Raiden became great around the time he started rejecting all ties to the player AKA the faggots controlling him, eventually getting a weapon that makes him play nothing like Snake at all.
>>
>>342763104

But he wasn't trained by video games, they were nothing compared to how he was brought up.

It's funny how Rising finished Raiden's arc of being a survivor of being forced into Child Soldier servitude and the consequences it had on his morality, far better then 4 ever did.

Rose is kind of annoying, but thats part of her character. Raiden is a bit annoying at first but then he grows on people with actual fucking experiences in relationships. Colonel is just an AI who is only programmed to guide to one point. That will get annoying no matter what.
>Lol its shit on purpose, mgs2 apologist btfo
Except it isn't. In gameplay it was decent and improved upon MGS1's bullshit. Story wise it was godly because of all the tricks and details. Graphics were fine for the time, haven't aged too well.

And that's why you don't directly translate Japanese, as everything sounds different with its structure and retarded in English. Seriously, the fact that you're allowed to make broken sentences makes it obvious that you're supposed to format it a bit. Just watch any Japanese film or any anime, pick a random line, and direct translate it to see what I mean, as the translator is almost as important as the original writer. The completely different sentence order is also why machine translations of sentences are usually terrible.

From a thematic and narrative standpoint MGS4 is the worse. If you truly believe MGS2 is worse than MGS4 than you have a misunderstanding of all four games.

Yes indeed. The way they ported it was pretty much by creating an inaccurate emulator.

Thematic narratives don't mean much when the whole game is dogshit because of it.

MGS2 based every single one of its assets around its hamfisted narrative and because of it Raiden was boring, Rose was boring, every character in the game was a shitty cutout put in place to say exactly what they needed to in order for the narrative to work. Big Shell is measurably worse than Shadow Moses, the bosses weren't even fun to fight, and the entire game up until the explosive ending sequence is comprised of an easter egg hunt and an escort mission. Two of the worst tropes in all of videogames and something thought it'd be a good idea to make a game based around them.

Sure, all of the delivery at the end with the Patriots codec call and the social commentary was really cool but it wasn't worth slogging through several hours of that trepid shit just to get to that part.

MGS4 functions better as a videogame and its story manages to be more functional and straightforward and does what it needs to do in order to support all of the characters and elements in the game. It didn't need a contrived 2deep4u narrative to hold it up.

>when the whole game is dogshit because of it.

Have you actually played a dogshit game in your life? An untested, bug filled, unplayable mess? MGS2 is not that.

>and because of it Raiden was boring

How was Raiden boring? It was cool how he's brought up to be this rookie, learning from Snake. And how he doesn't know how to deal with his memories of being a child soldier.

>Rose was boring

I can see how you and most would think that but I never found her boring.

>Big Shell is measurably worse than Shadow Moses

Yeah probably.

>the bosses weren't even fun to fight

You know replaying the series over and over again throughout the years I can safely say none of the bosses are ever fun to fight except the ones you can do unique things to like Vamp, The End, The Fear, Raven, etc. Most MGS bosses are purely serviceable, with MGS4 having the absolute worst bosses as they're all sopnges.

>and the entire game up until the explosive ending sequence is comprised of an easter egg hunt and an escort mission

This is a gross simplification as it ignores the stealth gameplay, and ignores the fact that the escort mission is maybe 12 minutes long minus cutscenes.

>MGS4 functions better as a videogame and its story manages to be more functional and straightforward and does what it needs to do in order to support all of the characters and elements in the game. It didn't need a contrived 2deep4u narrative to hold it up.

MGS4 has wonderful gameplay for sure, better than MGS2. The problem is its narrative and themes, and in MGS narrative and themes are important. The narrative and themes of MGS4 fucking suck in how they're presented, and characters are ruined.

The whole "make the world one" thing the boss says at the very end is interesting but there's nothing before that. And then it's negated because she actually just sacrificed for her country. I feel like Peace Walker handled her motivations a lot better.

I think MGS4 was fine in that regard, there's the war economy/global control that's expanded on, the Big Boss/Zero duality, that "the man doesn't live up to the legend" from MGS1 and especially the end with Big Boss, dropping the guns and all of that. The plot itself was full of bullshit, but I really like where it went.

>The nightmares? They never go away, Snake. Once you've been on the battlefield, tasted the exhilaration, the tension... it all becomes part of you. Once you've awakened the warrior within... it never sleeps again. You crave ever bigger tensions, ever bigger thrills. As a mercenary, I'd think you would have realized that by now. You care nothing for power, or money, or even sex. The only thing that satisfies your cravings is war! All I've done is give you a place for it. I've given you a reason to live.

This is the end to the entire series. It's the motivation behind every character, the means by which Parasites, Nanomachines, Metal Gear, Soldiers, Guns, Genes are all employed. There is no greater good, nobody is fighting the good fight, nobody is ethically superior or striving for anything different.

The Boss was not a hero, Big Boss was not a villain. Men are not good or evil, because good and evil do not exist, but men do.

There is no charity, no good will, no lesser evil. Just the thrill.

>All men seek happiness. This is without exception. Whatever different means they employ, they all tend to this end. The cause of some going to war, and of others avoiding it, is the same desire in both, attended with different views. The will never takes the least step but to this object. This is the motive of every action of every man, even of those who hang themselves.

I don't remember her speech all that well but talking about breaking frontiers and unifying the world when you're super patriotic and willing to go for an undercover mission to steal a lot of dosh for your country is kinda contradictory.

>Unfortunately it turns characters into caricatures of themselves like EVA and Naomi.
What's wrong with EVA? She was mostly the infodump, which means at worst she'd be bland but not a caricature, she dies way too fast for that.
Naomi's scenes were full of melodrama I'll admit.

>Fuck that man that shit was ridiculous. We didn't get one single hint that Zero admired The Boss like Snake did.
It wasn't foreshadowed but I'm fine with the rest. Zero trying to make Big Boss a messiah, cloning him, both obsessing over each other, that's what I'd expect. And it makes the whole picture pretty interesting : Zero wants to change the world by controlling it and imposing his guidelines which ended up creating an endless conflict (war economy), Big Boss wants to change it by creating endless conflict from the very start, The Boss wanted to retire from that shit.

Meanwhile The Patriots used information control to use "Guns" to cause an endless conflict, creating a neverending war economy to fund literal Utopia in the United States.

And Snake destroyed it. Not for the greater good. Not for a just cause. For revenge
>>

>and willing to go for an undercover mission to steal a lot of dosh for your country is kinda contradictory.

Because she believed in the United States and what they were doing. Just like EVA. Stealing the Legacy would've helped either country. If you call EVA during Operation Snake Eater, one of the conversations is this:

Snake: Why'd you do it? Weren't you born and raised in America?

Eva: Yes, in a small rural town. I never even knew there were other countries,
other cultures, other ways of thinking. Until I went to work for the NSA.
Then, one day, I'd found I'd lost faith in the things I'd been taking for
granted.

Snake: What did you see? What was it that made you want to change sides?

Eva: You wouldn't believe me if I told you.

Snake: Try me.

Eva: I saw the universe.

Snake: The universe?

Eva: Not the actual universe. The universe as the intelligence community sees
it. I realized that the gravity in this universe was holding me back. That's
all. People and their countries are both changed by the environment. And by
the times.

>What's wrong with EVA?

Big Mama : The forbidden fruit. Appropriate... No?

>I took the apple from
the Snake... And was cast out of Eden.

Not only are lines like this fucking stupid, the second one is completely and utterly wrong. Snake was tempted by EVA, not EVA being tempted by Snake.

> Zero trying to make Big Boss a messiah, cloning him, both obsessing over each other, that's what I'd expect. That's part of translation, dipshit. Literal structure and meaning are not the same. A translation should be as direct as it can get away with being while still being fully comprehensible.

If subs were direct, literal translations, they'd be shitty, broken english at best, totally incomprehensible at worst. It's a translator's job to make sense of what they're translating. That's why we have different translators' editions of the same foreign works. There are multiple editions of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, for example, and of the Hagakure.

Linguistics is more complicated than people seem to realize.
