What is the in universe explanation for how Metal Gears went from being huge bipedal thing Sahelanthropus to things like TX-55 and Metal Gear D?

Huey and Strangelove were ahead of their time and Sahelanthropus didn't actually work and was just a vanity project for Skull Face to hype armies on to sell them his shitty nukes. Kind of like Kojima and TPP. When Huey escaped no one could find him because Strangelove requested the Patriots AI to protect Hal which included Huey by extension so no one with access to the Patriots database could find Huey since everything on him was wiped. And Strangelove was dead. They kept their notes in their heads or something. Plus without parasites half of their technology didn't work which is why nanomachines were developed to replace them but the Patriots decided that just giving people super powers with nanomachines was more effective than giving superpowers to their giant robot marketing tools when it comes to actual warfare. And Metal Gears aren't ever meant to actually be used, they're deterrents and just knowing that the enmy has an all terrain tank that can launch untraceable warheads is enough of a deterrent for most people even if the machine itself is unwieldy and impractical. So they never bothered trying to finish a Sahelanthropus style weapon again.

No it really isn't. It's a bipedal nuclear platform. Gekko aren't considered Metal Gears because they have nothing to do with nuclear warfare, despite being bipedal weapons.
