golden age ended in 2004
Golden age ended in 2006 with seventh gen and emphasis completely shifting to AAA industry. From that point on really good games became too rare to consider it golden age.

Golden age was 1996-2004. It's been nothing but spiraling down ever since, with handful shiny sparks of hope there and here.
I just recently read through a game magazine from 2009, and was shocked how literally nothing has changed since. The top games mentioned in it were: Far Cry (2), Cowadooteh, AssCreed, GTA(4), TES (Oblivion).
