I've heard conflicting reports, are there multiple PLAYABLE characters?
Or are they just party members/story characters? It would be nice if they feel a bit different.

No. I played the first Drakengard and quickly fucked off from the series until now. I just know that in games like Ys and Dragon's Dogma the forced (or nearly forced) parties turn me off instantly.

Not that Anon, but I never bothered with Nier because everyone who has played the game (whether they like it or not) has said the same thing; the gameplay is anywhere between mediocre and complete shit but everything else is pretty great. That doesn't interest me enough to want to play it.
With Plat handling the combat it seems like that will no longer be the case and the gameplay will match the quality of everything else, so now I am interested. I don't know why you have difficulty understanding that.

That's what stopped me from playing Nier for years. And when I actually played it I was really surprised that gameplay is actually quite nice. It's not cuhrayzee tier or anything but it's not bad, there's a lot of neat and unique elements to it.

You should immediately disregard anyone who says the gameplay is complete shit. It's serviceable at worst. That being said, the story is the focus, and there will almost definitely be ties to Automata, so you should go play it.
With Platinum developing it could this possibly be one of the best games ever made if the story is as good or better than Nier?

The game basically has a Chrono Trigger-tier team behind it, so it could definitely be one of the best jrpgs ever made should the story and music hold up, and if the boss fight is any indication, the music definitely appears to be holding up.
