It's impossible. Today's gamer is incapable of investing in getting without being told they're totally badass all the time by the game.
Arena shooters are about getting absolutely fucking rekt the first months you play them, untill you finally take that step and the game finally makes sense. 99,9% of the people stopped by then, or started playing babby modes like instagib. This was tough back in the day, but now with a million games that offer gratification with the least amount of effort, it's basically impossible.

almost every arena shooter I see is in some stupid minimalist artstyle with minimalist everything and completely uninspired weapon designs, probably to appeal to some sort of e-sports crowd who demand everything be blocky, flat, and matte so it's easy for them to understand
