FFV, job system is GOAT only job system that comes close for the main series is FFX-2 (cringe tier story aside gameplay is great).
FFVIII was actually my first and I was relatively new to RPG when I first played it and sucked ass at it and didn't like it. Came back years later and replayed it and it grew on me, the junction system is extremely unbalanced and makes the whole game trivial if you know what your doing.

FF8 was my first game to play in the series. I rented it at Blockbuster back then. Was instantly hooked. I was about to rent FF7 but I didn't and I thought FF8 was a step up and continuing story from the previous but I was totally wrong after playing FF8. I can actually agree with this, it just sucks most of the great environments and aesthetic were a big hallway with no exploration. That being said I didn't hate XIII it was just a huge disappointed and nowhere near as good as previous games. I think it was made worse by XII having one of the most exploitable worlds in the series then going to that.

I think X's story was unique because it's one of the few games (in fact one of the few works of fiction) where the main character is not the destined hero who has to save the world. That's Yuna. X's story is like seeing VII through Tifa's eyes. It's probably the only fantasy story I've come across like that and the only thing similar that comes to mind is Max's role in Fury Road.

I haven't finished VI, but I feel like there are too many characters from a gameplay stance. It's cool how they all intertwine stories, but I just can't keep all their unique mechanics straight. Like memorizing all the combos that one guy has so I can suplex a train. That's one guy. Then another guy has different attacks depending on how long you let a bar charge up, but you have to know what each charge level does. There's so much memorization involved.

FFV, no contest. Its job system is far better than the other three in the series(FFIII, FFT/A, FFXII IZJS) because outside of a very small number of outliers it's reasonably balanced and fun to tweak with, it has the best sense of progression in the entire series, damage numbers don't spiral out of control unless you're using a combo that only comes together in the extreme lategame, and unlike literally every game after it you can tell the designers knew what they were doing and balanced around what they knew you'd have instead of throwing content at the game and going "whatever, who fucking cares?"

The end of discs 1 and 2 (especially the end of 1 - from Timber on, really) hold up against the best of any final fantasy. It's not perfect, but the high points are incredibly high (just as the plot twist in disc 3 is right there with the series worst points).
Definitely love this game though. But tough to replay too often because of drawing magic. Just takes too long. Next time im going to use the magic booster on the PC version.

It wasn't but 5 or 10 years ago that everyone hated FFIX and FFVII and VIII were the favorites. I remember when X came out, and it's like everyone played VII, VIII, skipped IX, and went straight to X. So many people's first Final Fantasy was VII, and nobody liked the earlier ones because graphics, hurr durr, and I was quite salty about it at the time.
Anyways, IX and VIII have similar gameplay, but the characters and atmosphere couldn't possibly get any more different. Final Fantasy VIII has angsty badasses for characters set in a world largely devoid of color (brown, gray, and navy blue everywhere! Even the greens were shades of pine green). The game, itself, was a very industrial world.
Final Fantasy IX was throwback to the colorful fantasy worlds reminiscent of fairy tales, and the characters were surreal and very creative. Realism was not only not valued, but it was rejected.
I think it's totally reasonable for people to only like or dislike one of the two games.
