I always hate playing the beginning of the game because you're some shit pleb walking around in rags with a rusted weapon. The game picks up in term of gameplay fun after the first few hours. Pretty lack luster spells and abilities at the start. I'd recommend not playing a mage character just because I think the melee/bow gameplay is more polished.

Turned off lots on the display, so i've only got minimap and health/stamina on.

Any other tips to have fun with this?
Can I play through the game without doing sidequests or do i need the exp?

start on hard mode if you want a challenge, it's fun overcoming the crappy initial scaling when you eventually get to the point of being able to wipe everything

I pirated it so I never got to share my pawn or play with others', but I still had a lot of fun with the system

Not necessarily, provided you keep up with your gear.
Also, most quest boards, especially the encampment's board, have hunting/extermination quests, so you can pick those up, and grab extra gold and gear just for killing regular monsters while you play.

That said, DD has a lot more to do than just the main quest. There's a decent amount to explore/murder, so I'd encourage you to wander and try a few sidequests. It really gave me a sense of adventure on my first playthrough.
>>
>>342654036
Nothing. Some try to paint DD as a financial failure, and we will never know the exact figures, but we know that DD sold in a way that pleased Capcom. Which means a lot. We also know that Capcom is "really satisfied" with the pc release.

For those in the thread who are being genuine, you can get Ferrystones for fast-traveling to portcrystals located across the map
You can also find portcrystals and place them to make your own fast travel points where you want
Ferrystones can be found all across the map, in Fournival's shop, in the Black Cat shop, and once per in-game day for free beside the pawn's guild.
Portcrystals are at the Blue Moon Tower in the base game, and ALL OVER THE FUCKING PLACE in Dark Arisen, starting with the Everfall.

>I'd recommend not playing a mage character just because I think the melee/bow gameplay is more polished
As much as I love magic in DDDA, I have to agree. They just aren't really balanced for most approaches. The fact that you can solo everything with normal gameplay tactics and advanced tactics with all other classes sort of proves this.

Mages/Sorcerers just aren't going to be able to beat everything without becoming cheese fests. It becomes about finding some terrain that gets people stuck and/or relying on pawns to completely direct away attention. It feels more supportive than combatative despite the Sorcerer obviously being built for assault.

And I honestly think it boils down to cast times. Once you acquire the Wyrmking ring most magic builds really flourish. Up until then, you just suck most battles. Your damage is good enough, but you can hardly ever get off spells and your brittle as fuck. Which again, fair enough because of damage output, but that doesn't matter much when you can't get off spells without cheesing like crazy.

They should have really had some kind of thing where higher vocation levels give faster cast times and different staves give different cast times. That would have really helped balance the class out and in all honesty, just make it fun

There are some esoterically hidden quests though. I actually just discovered a new quest in Cassardis where you chase this guy around the world and save him by giving him herbs. I played 5 playthroughs and only just now discovered that quest. I had no idea who to talk to in order to start it, and I just randomly stumbled upon the guy. Which, to be fair, I think is cool, but that kind of thing would work better if there was hardly any or just no quest boards, only personal quests. Also if no one had things above their head saying "I'm more important because I have a quest" MMO crap, so you weren't just suspecting people to come to you instead of you having to look for them.

I'm not sure I agree with that direction that DDO took. Some of those enemies look... like they don't fit in with the design concepts of the original at all. Although I'm more interested to hear about a two. It really sucks that they basically used DD as a way to see if Monster Hunter could do some of the same things, but then just took it to MMO land because they had no vision for it.

That's the one that causes it to take so long. Otherwise you could just run through the shit and skip cutscenes quickly. All the other ones are good. And the pawn guild quest is actually bretty good. Good exploran, and some top tier moments like the ogre
>>
>>342659609

The game was unfortunately rushed like no tomorrow as well. SO much content got cut.
>>
>>342659708
You can still finish the game in about 20 minutes from start to finish on NG+.
>>
>>342659349
The game gets fun after you kill Grigori and can just fuck around before the weak as fuck Seneschal. I was so fucking bored before that. DD is unironically one of the games that takes 10-20 hours to get good.
>>
>>342659609
The dragon really was underplayed. He could have had far more quests and the green necromancer dude could have played more of a threat, too. Those two factors plus some real loss could have amped up the stakes quite a bit.
>>
See that's the thing about Dragon's Dogma. Everything's kind of shit, but it's not the unbearable kind of shit, and as you go on and get into the groove of things you slowly learn to love it.

What? How?

I know the story isn't that long, but 20 mins? What if you set up warps properly? I mean even then you have to do at least 6 of the 8 king's quests (separated in two parts with 4 each).
>>
>>342649929
I'm playing it right now. I like it a lot. There are flaws but the good is outweighing the bad.
>>
It's okay. The combat feels good a lot of the time and I see why people like it.

>Open world is kind of empty, game steers you to stay near the 2 towns most of the time instead of exploring a ton, spawns are static
>Not much incentive for optional quests, making it even less attractive to explore
>Very few boss monsters, mostly just variations
>Game keeps trying to force party system on you
>Minmaxing system creates rage within OCD autists' hearts
>Tons of emphasis on climbing system, but is not really fun with constant staggering, fidgety and jarring motion, clipping, crazy camera, and awkward tank controls
>Farming BBI gear sucks donkey dick, RNG will do everything it can to fuck you. Not really necessary, but what the fuck else are you going to do endgame?
>End boss is a lame plot boss with no challenge
>Lots of stat checks, especially early and especially if you do decide to play alone. That is, unless you know which chests to farm :^)
>These stat checks can make some parts pretty slow, and so the meme about the guy being unable to kill goblins was born - which can actually happen with strong monsters.

>>342659349
Iuno, I think the fun pretty much goes downhill once you fight most of the monsters. Maybe around cockatrice or the first dragon-type? I suppose by then you are near the end anyway if you dont have Dark Arisen
>>
>>342659732
I'm really not surprised to hear this. People always said its great, and it is. But I really think it lacks a severe amount of content. Reskins of enemies are fine, especially when they have some new moves too like some of the post-game monsters. But when you have a small roster like that it comes off as lazy.
>>
>>342659732
Normally I don't like fast travel but Christ did Dogma need it. The world is just so boring to explore, and it sends you on long ass fetch quests. The escort quests were the worst especially. You have to haul ass to that far off fort where you have to carve through bandits and goblins only to get one hit KO by the drake. Then you gotta go all the way back. So boring.
>>
>>342659732
Do you have any sources of the cut content. I'm just curious what was gonna be in there.
>>
>>342659782
Ddda ng+ is the biggest joke I've seen.
But hard mode ng was difficult to me since I was 1 hit by everything and did no damage so I had to rely on pawns.
>>
>>342660073
>spawns are static
Mods are actually being worked on to change this. They've discovered the files that dictate where shit is located. And they technically can, with a lot of trial and error, change what enemies spawn where (which will be cool for player made hard mode mods). But when it becomes easier, expect people to right randomizer scripts for weapon locations, drops and enemy locales. Obviously some will be more lore friendly than others. But it will make the game have so much more replayability. Already they can modify spells. And not just statistics either.
>>
>>342660073
>Unless you know which chests to farm

Are there hidden chests with good loot or some shit? Most I've found was some shit after dealing with the Witch's daughter's side quest.
>>
>>342659973
There's a speedrun mode where you get a reward (witch loli's clothing) for finishing the game quickly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuD5UU0n5s0
>>
>>342659838
Itsuno planned a whole fuckload more but they couldn't get it all into the game because of scope issues.
Nigga wanted Grigori to take you into orbit and shit.
>>
>>342660490
For each class, there aren't that many weapons you will be interested in (especially before BBI). Further, chests have determined loot, but they are RNG. You just reload which takes fucking forever if you don't get what you want (chests do eventually respawn if you don't want to do this).

For example, heavenspeak has good armor, and insane bow, and good physical and lightning daggers. The crypt has extremely good fire daggers which will wreck everything. You don't need to fight anything to get these items, just run past a few enemies.

So, really you just need to know the chest locations for the class you are focusing on if you want to fuck shit up.
>>
>>342660490
Yeah definitely. The game has several good chests. Some are deceptive (like the tier 1 chests that hide amazing element weapons). For instance If you skip straight to the Ancient Quarry, one with three ogres in it there is a chest up on multiple cliffs inside a wall that looks like the basic wooden box chest. That one gives Eden's Warden, the only fire sword for Fighter/Mystic Knight but is really rare. You can stand beside a chest before opening it. Then save the game. Open it. If it isn't what you want, just quit to main menu WITHOUT saving or die via the god's bane if you're that far, then reload and open it again.
>>
>>342660986
>>342661132
I see. Thanks for the information.

>You don't need to fight anything to get these items

This aspect has disappointed me so far. For example coming across a large goblin camp or a powerful ogre and they don't really drop anything but materials.

The dragon comes to harass Gransys and the surrounding nations every few decades or so, bringing all kinds of monsters and badguys and chaos with it.
Not only is it hard enough to build more towns and forts with monsters and bandits everywhere, but one would then have to deal with the village likely being razed every time the dragon comes around looking for a new Arisen.

In any case, Gransys is an economic trainwreck with a small population and a weak kingdom so it's fucked to begin with

Right now, that's the easiest mods, as always. I just used ReShade and modified the colors my self to get better contrast and more saturation and vibrance out of the game's washed out pallete. But, yes, there are people in the back ground working on how to make better use of the systems. Something called ArcTool is used to unpack all MT Framework games, including DD. Then you can actually see the coding for a ton of stuff in the game. There is this mod,

http://www.nexusmods.com/dragonsdogma/mods/256/?

which modifies many statistics for your character and gives much lower stamina costs for running, which is a god send.

Its a good idea poorly executed

The light produced is low tier 90s shit, they could have done better lighting had this not been rushed as fuck

Which is a fact a lot of people seem to forget about DD, Capcom thought it was dead in the water and not going to sell any copies so they forced the dev team to release early. Thats why it feels so half finished.
>>
>>342667175
If the game was updated to DX11 or just somehow modded to have dynamic lighting and shadows in dark places instead of static, fixed light sources then it probably would be much better. Also I think that it should be a little brighter when you have above half a lantern full and then the current brightness should be reserved for half full. To compensate, have an animation for refueling, which would make it more difficult to do in combat.

>have multiple quests far away

>making sure to travel by day and rest at inns when it gets to dark
>finding secret passage ways through a mountain range and that readyness to help the guy who needs to go through it
>that commrodery when you travel with pawns that actually feel like they're learning
>thinking you can take on the drake the first time you see it
>arriving at the destination and then turning in all the quests

it wasted so much time, but I loved it.

Game designers consider sitting on their asses drinking coffee and saying 'how cool would X be' as game design

Those 'it took Y amount of years' are ALWAYS wrong. But hes right in saying DD was rushed because it was, the original plan was far far larger and Capcom snipped it before they could finish it.
>>
>>342667889
>>342668029
>>342668135
Also I think its important to note that they had to build in:
>Shadow of the colossus climbing systems
>Some of the most responsive and accurate combat in any game
>A learning pawn AI system
>Get all this to run on shitty 7th gen consoles, which they could have done better at given more time

All of this, completely from scratch because they were using MT Framework which had never been programmed for open world games before. AND Capcom cut them off early.

Gregory the Grigori had so few lines but they were perfectly delivered.

Which one are you playing? Figher? Mystic Knight? Assasin? Those all use sword and shield. It varies based on which you choose

>>342671261
I guess I'll try Mystic Knight, I've not fucked with that before.

That scene where you meet him in the Old Castle Ruins initially and he proposes the choice gave me goose bumps.

>I literally picked up the girl carried her back to the entrance

>Turned around unsheathing my sword and shield

>Walked confidently at him

>Stay away from my weapon you beast!

Sigils are the bomb. But you can always get into counter magic on the shield. Shit is raw.

>Perfect block with fire enchanted shield. Knock enemy in the air shoot 3 fireballs and kill everything in front of me.

So good...

I know what you mean about DkS.

>Bows are only good for pulling. Unless you spec in to a greatbow in which it's good for initially weakening the enemy before you resort to your sword anyway
>Shields are mechanically inferior in every scenario so everyone will be using one weapon and maybe an offhand built for parrying quickly because there's nothing else worth the weight
>Magic doesn't hit hard. Nor does it regenerate.Forcing you to build for melee when you inevitably do -50 damage on the 1 1/2 casts of your spell you have
>Consumables like bombs and knives aren't good enough to build a playstyle around.
>The only legitimate defensive option is the fast roll in each game so everyone builds around that.

Melee combat in souls is fun, but it is a game that limits it's scope severely.

Yes I am implying hitting people with offensive magic is so weak it heals them.

my first ogre fight was in the everfall and my Magical Conan guy had climbed onto his shoulders and was whacking him about the head and shoulders while he wails on my escort girls only to blunder off the edge, fall down two levels and leave me with a vocation boost and level up.

Some sidequests will say "kill X number of Y in area Z" and those are a slog, but they are not timed, you can take as many as you want, you don't have to go anywhere to turn the quest in, and most importantly the Z location actually does not matter, you can the certain enemy type at any location. So take as many of those as possible, and run around doing the actual sidequests you get from NPC's.

They definitely cross the line from ottermode into something less attractive. Nagisa looks alright, at least.

Art varies but if you watch the show you'll see it, their bodies are just weird
>>
>>342672203
True. Yeah what really pisses me off is how Souls vets treat it like a non-issue. They act like all of that imbalance is okay, because the game is "supposed to be hard" when all it really does is kill diversity. The biggest fans of Souls games literally kill their potential by fighting to keep everything the same for fear that change will "casualize" the experience. As much as I hate dumbing down, I hate elitism/"hardcore" players almost as bad since they won't let games evolve out of sheer, pertrified fear that they'll lose their toys.

Those aren't the guys he was talking about. The guys in the picture are from Binan.

I was going to say, I've got more muscle than any of those dudes and I'm definitely not "monstrously muscly."

>>342672203
Depends which one you're talking about. Arcane is pretty solid in BB and magic is arguably op in DeS DS and it could one shot bosses at many point in DS2, DS3 is the first game it's been really ass in, or early BB.

Most of those players don't even know how to fight correctly. They can complete the game, but so many players are so plodding and defensive they let opportunities to make the game easy pass them by.

You can absolutely tear through souls games if you are willing to accept a little risk and danger in trade for good opportunities. Playing timidly makes the game MORE difficult if you are willing to believe that.

>>342673481
BB isn't a souls game. It's made by From and shares a lot of the same mechanics cause it's the same dev, but it's not Souls. Not saying it's bad, but it is it's own little thing that's still cool.

I confess I never got to play DeS.

DkS1 had a few cool things but you were still going to be a melee hybrid because of the severe and forced limits on magic. DkS2 magic wasn't so good. Unless you were a hex mage in which case HAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAA holy shit why would you be a magic man and not use hexes? Yet you were still going to be a melee hybrid to an extent. DkS3 is an utter disgrace in terms of magic. At least it could be fun in the previous games even if it still forced you to have a competent melee build out of inevitability.

And that's the real problem here. Inevitability. Souls inevitably forces you to be melee or hybridize melee because the other options cannot float on their own no matter how powerful. It's an inherent and even purposeful flaw in the game's design. Even then, melee combat doesn't really have as much variation as something like DD. The deeper you get in to PVP in souls in particular, the more you realize how everything shares a wide and common foundation on how it works.

The original idea of the game makes it seem like something that would be above God (I forgot how they call it). You would be a human of course, not necessarily the Arisen.

I would recommend anyone who's interested in Dragon's Dogma to check out the GDC Conference, it's pretty interesting.

I really want another Dragon's Dogma from Hideaki Itsuno.
