I actually miss this mechanic. It lends itself to the feeling of adventure, because you actually had to prepare yourself before you left, and you had to manage your weight and what spoils you could carry.
The only thing I would fix, is preventing the items from disappearing after you leave the map. That was the real flaw in the system. But people blamed the weight, and not the massive technical oversight fromsoft allowed to get through.

Truth. Sucks that the best version of pretty much every weapon in the series started and ended in DeS. Quicker, more versatile, all around funner to use.

Yeah, that weapon is OP even if you aren't a mage, so imagine what the scaling would be like once it reaches +5, it's the only weapon you need to finish the game.
Also try to get the epee rapier, it scales with you magic stat (int) and does fire damage, so you have two good weapons with different damage type.

Due to shitty internet back then I played it offline. No help, no messages. At some point I looked up upgrading paths because shit was confusing. Missed that one witch, barely got any of the special weapons.

Well they executed it kinda poorly in the end. If you couldn't pick up the item, then it auto dropped. If items are dropped and you leave the world, they disappear. If you are exploring a level and get a heavy set piece that takes up most your carry weight, you are forced back to the nexus or to not even try to pick up other items if you don't know what they are since you don't want to risk them dropping. Then you gotta make a sacrifice and choose which item to drop if you do find yourself completely full.
Really if the items would just stay in the area even after dropping and would not risk disappearing (or coop partners being able to pick it up), then it wouldn't be such a big deal and I would welcome the mechanic back.
