At some point the open ended nature of a game with a linear story progression might come to a crossroad where despite all they've done, their options are limited and they must proceed past the bottleneck.
This is one of those moments in a game with a linear story.
I mean imagine NWN2 if you could just fuck off and never go to neverwinter and find out about the shard, that would be amazing, but it wouldn't be NWN2 fundementally.
Also yeah, this was a shitty dialogue tree, if there shoudl only be one real option then there should only be one real option unless those other 3 have additonal hints hidden in them, or change your characters stats in some way (aka, alignment)
