Other M had inklings of good ideas that never materialized well, such as the third person perspective and combat, and simply confusing ones like going into first person to fire missles. Why was that necessary?
Super and Zero were treated as gameplay gospel instead of a base for a new game, and it showed in trying so hard to be simply those in 3D, and ramming a 2D game into 3D almost never works.

As much as i hate to bring out the tired Souls formula for fanwank reboots, it could work for metroid, if suitably remixed so as not to be a complete clone.
Lock on based combat, in where you shoot and dodge alien creatures out to kill you, and exploration of an open 3D world with savepoints in where you return to a home base (Call and Board your ship) and choose which savepoint to reawaken at (Land your ship) screams metroid.
But the idea falls apart if you try flesh it out. So many ways it could go wrong.

It's just extremely concentrated/radioactive Phazon.
As for the "teeth", don't forget that the Impact Crater is a Leviathan from Phaaze and as such it has organic parts. Personally, they look like bones to me.

I don't want any new Metroid games at all until Nintendo gets their shit together.
Look at Federation Force. If I told you Nintendo was making a Federation spin-off with co-op and customizable mechs you would go nuts.
But somehow Nintendo takes that idea and turns it into cartoon astronauts rolling balls around.
You can even say the same thing about Other M. Third person, faster gameplay, better combat. These are good ideas. It should have been a great game and it was a total disaster instead.
It doesn't matter how cool the ideas are because something is clearly wrong on the execution end of things.

I always thought that Fusion ended on kind of a cliffhanger, with Samus in a position where she'd probably have a lot of questions to answer for and there could be a plot where she's arrested but then shit hits the fan and space pirates raid the place and samus has to escape and there are metroids for some reason. Like some other anon pointed out there are a lot of contrived ways you could get metroids back into the universe, the problem is how to do that without making the last metroid in super Metroid feel less special.

Yeah, that's a good point. Maybe Samus gets arrested, but the twist is that the big bad evil guys only arrested her to take her precious metroid dna to make metroids for some dumb reason. The jail could be on some kind of space Australia where you wander around a prison planet collecting all the stuff they took from you and fighting escaped metroids and space pirates probably.
Point being there's plenty of room for stories in Metroid, even though Metroid 2 really did write the whole franchise into a corner.
