All the themes are great! I still listen to them all on a semi-regular basis.

Demon's Souls still has a certain something the other Souls games don't, I'm not gonna say it's the best in the series but it still feels the most fresh to me (partly because the Dark series has been run into the fucking ground at this point) but I just love the slightly more grounded Medieval atmosphere so much, Dark Souls always felt a bit too high fantasy with it's everlasting dragons and sun deities and all of that.

I still don't know why this game puts you 10 minutes behind if you die to a boss.

I get so close to beating him, and then I die from a mistake or shockwaves and have to go all the way back to the first boss's area and from there go all the way back to the boss to get another attempt.

Running past shit kinda works, but when you finally get to the fog you just have to pray the tower knight isn't going to spear you so you can run past the stairs and get everything back to attempt to fight him.

Any tips? Hit the legs, wait for him to fall, and hit his head is pretty much what I've been doing.

If you run straight to the stairs 99% of the time you are going to make it. And for the boss itself, get the enchant weapon spell, never lock on, stay ALWAYS behind it's feet and only get really close to it when striking, and be patient. One or two strikes at a time are fine. Rolling backwards after a strike is fine but if in this fight you need to roll a lot, you are doing it wrong.

I feel like Tower Knight is the shining example of one of the most important lessons on Souls bosses: do not be afraid of the boss.
My first time fighting him I spent half the battle cowering in a safe zone, or running out to stab him once and then running back in. The fight dragged on and I made a lot of stupid mistakes and spent nearly my entire store of grass.
What you really gotta do is hound his ankles like a chihuahua with rabies and he'll go down no problem.

That first encounter will always have a special place in my heart.

Autism incoming.

Level design remains consistently high quality throughout the game, and some places like Latria or the Valley have yet to be surpassed in the subsequent games in my mind.

No arbitrary limits placed on the player (like the number of Estus flasks you can carry or the number of times you can cast a spell). Whatever limits are there are determined by your stats, which you're free to upgrade or not at your own pace, allowing for deeper and less restrictive character building.

No poise means that fights are entirely about skill. It's all about who can land the first hit instead of stacking up poise and fishing for backstabs. Despite this, heavy weapons are still viable because of their good frame data and hitboxes. Every build feels powerful and fun to use.

More fairly telegraphed traps. Not that Dark Souls was bad about this really, but Demon's just does it better. You're much more likely to see something coming your first time through and avoid it in DeS compared to DaS where there's at least a couple points where a new player is almost guaranteed to die their first time through.

I think DeS just unquestionably nails the story elements better than DaS did. One thing I really like is that you're given a very clear motivation at the start of the game to come to Boletaria and fight the demons (and it's up to you to decide whether you're driven by greed, heroism, etc.). From the very start of the game, you know exactly what your goal is and how you're going to achieve it, compared to DaS where you're told to go ring a bell because "something happens" if you do. You have a vague objective and no real motive.

Also, having a church that worships a single God (that different characters in-game believe differently about) is more relatable to our real world than DaS having a pantheon of smaller gods who are all mundane physical beings who you can just go kill. It also makes the "God" a lot more mysterious and adds more intrigue to the world.

I remember the first time I saw the Tower Knight. It was amazing.

I will now write about my experience with Souls games. This is autism.

>Demon's Souls
First Souls I played. I love it from start to finish. I think I like Demon's Souls the most because it was the first Souls I played and every surprise or trap set by From felt like nothing I had played before. Also, best waifu.

>Dark Souls
At first the I didn't like the interconnected world because I felt it was a drag to back track most of the time, this turned me off for a while off the game. But when I gave it a second chance I began to appreciate the level design of this interconnected world. That was until you clear Anor Londo, from there the game really felt like it already showed me all the things that could make me go "oh, wow!" and just threw some enemies and Bosses at me. Lost Izalith is plain and the Kiln of the First Flame didn't felt like the final stage housing the final Boss.

>Dark Souls 2
I really can't say anything that hasn't already been said. Even with all of its faults, I had a lot of fun with Dark Souls 2 (and SotFS) and it's probably the one I played the most. The only thing that I truly dislike, specially when transitioning from one Souls to another, is it's fucking movement. The animations feel simply weird, I do like that they are a little bit more grounded than the ones from the first DaS (for example, you can't do a 180 degree change in direction with a consecutive attack). That said this is the only Souls in which I can say without a doubt that some enemies/bosses/areas are outright complete bullshit considering them being a conscious decision from the devs. Also, fucking Soul Memory.

>Bloodborne
Tons of fun. Greatly appreciated chance of pace and setting. Miyazaki tried to make changes to the multiplayer and the only good thing out of it was the password matchmaking. I completely skipped Chalice Dungeons, I found them really boring.

>Dark Souls 3
I ran out of characters.

Good post. I do feel Tower of Latria was one of the most well designed levels of just about any game I've played. Demon's Souls wasn't really a horror game, but that level FELT like a horror game, with the traps, dangerous enemies and creepy tones. Loved it.

As someone else pointed out earlier, I liked that when you played Demon's Souls, it had a lower fantasy feel, more medieval, between the combat, design and even the enemies. You really felt like a random knight that traveled to Boletaria and just happened to become the most powerful demon of them all, vs being "Chosen" in the other souls games.

No weapon in the Souls series has ever approached the perfection of the DeS Estoc.

>Dat solid R1, roll R1, poke R1
>Dat solid combos you can add to each of them
>Dat way stronger combos you can pull off with the dash R1 and R2, which are balanced by being far order to pull off
>Dat choice between going offhand shield for pokes or kat for extra combo hits and range
>Unarguably top-tier, but not brokingly so, and takes skill to use properly

Literally perfection. In comparison, the Dark Souls 3 estoc was designed by and for retards.

I don't know if this is accurate, but Demon's Souls has always felt kind of arcadey to me in the simplicity of the mechanics and the way that levels are structured, the way you can play them in whatever order you feel like, items have very intentional placement which gives you an incentive to go to that world first depending on your character, like if you were a magician you'd want to go to the Shrine of Storms as soon as possible to get the Crecent Falchion.

I think that's why I revisit it as often as I do, certainly more than the other games, it's just such a fun game to come back to, and with World Tendecy events in mind as well one playthrough can end up playing out very differently from the other.
>>

>>
I miss the community the most, and it saddens me to see the current state of it.
>>
Continuing from >>342580597, I've also got a little to add about the Nexus.

The Nexus is really well designed. You have to go back there to get from any level to any other, so they made sure to get as much value out of it as possible. You use the Nexus for vendors, to learn and attune spells, to store excess items, to level up, to see leader boards, and to repair your gear. In DaS most of those functions are available at a bonfire or through another menu, but in DeS you have to interact with NPCs who you're always visiting in the Nexus to do any of that, which makes it feel more like a real home, or at least a place where you can enjoy a moment of peace between battles. Bonfires are more efficient, but the Nexus does a much better job really engrossing you.

I also think that's why people generally like the Nexus more than other hubs in the series. Being forced to go back to Majula or whatever to level up is a little annoying because it interrupts whatever you were in the middle of doing. You don't usually have any reason to go there except to level up and if not for that you could continue the gameplay uninterrupted but in DeS you have to go back to the Nexus anyways just to reach the next stage so you might as well level up, drop off your items, repair your gear, etc., while you're there. That doesn't really have anything to do with DaS1, since the designers were smart in that game and let you level up at a bonfire, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

This
Plus, I feel the bosses in DeS are better designed and bosses are a core element of the game. In Dark Souls, most bosses are beaten by getting behind them whereas most bosses in DeS presented a challenge you hadn't faced before and required a tactical evaluation to beat.

Phalanx, for example, is a great first boss because it teaches you about positioning and exploiting weaknesses (fire in this case).
>>
>>342581371
That's another thing I really like about DeS compared to other games in the series; the smart item placement and open-ended progression means that you can start a new game and immediately begin working on whatever build you want to do. There's a Str weapon in 2-1, a poison weapon in 3-1, a magic weapon in 4-1, and a faith weapon in 5-1, and they all come pre-upgraded to +1. Oddly, there's no early Dex weapon to grab, but you get an Uchi in 4-1 and the Hiltless in 4-2, so that kind of makes up for it.

>>342580689
I really liked Bloodborne. I'd consider it my second favorite game in the series, just behind DeS. The Victorian/Lovecraft setting felt really fresh and the faster-paced, poiseless gameplay was very welcome after playing DaS1 and 2. The story, aesthetics, and soundtrack were top-notch, and it has multiple 10/10 boss fights like Gerhman and the Orphan. My only criticisms would be that some of the bosses I think might have gone a little overboard in the difficulty (I'm not a fan of large, shambling monstrosities with erratic movements and thousands of dangling bits that obscure the player's view of the action) while others like Maria could have done with being a bit harder, and chalice dungeons could have been done way better (or not existed at all and expand the main game).

Storm King was a brilliant thematic boss. One of the first and most memorable experiences you have in the Shrine of Storms is finding the manta enemies and thinking "what the fuck is up with the flying spike-throwing manta rays?" And then the final boss is the big daddy of all those mantas and the reason why they were there in the first place. It all comes full circle. It's like poetry.

I remember back before DaS came out, the pr guys talked a lot about the contrast between light and dark, how the dark gloomy areas will depress you but then you step outside and the sunlight motivates you to keep going. But then in the final game almost everything is outside in the sun or at least in a well-lit area. Undead Burg and Parish, half of the catacombs, Valley of Drakes, Sen's Fortress, Anor Londo (when you first get there, at least), the archives and the Crystal Caves, all bright, sunny places. Even the swamp was fairly well-lit, especially compared to the one in DeS.

It just stuck out to me that the game with "Dark" in its title was way brighter than its predecessor.

I didn't know there was an upper level. I killed him while dodging crossbow bolts from all the people on the upper layers.

That's the difference between a Demon's Souls boss and a Dark Souls boss; if the Tower Knight was in Dark Souls, you wouldn't be able to reach the archers.

The game is better designed overall.

Faster gameplay, level design that actually had work put into it, and the flow of the game works better than that weird metroidvania-esque shit that Dark Souls tried to do. Most important of all, it doesn't become irritating to play halfway through.

Dark Souls 3 remedied the level design issue by focusing on a more linear, but clearer design rather than trying to mesh the world into this weird open world thing that just becomes a clusterfuck after a certain point in the game.

>>342583782
Deserved to be a better boss. Higher physical defenses, flies doing like twice the damage and forcing you to find some way to fix them (rolling into fire), and a more varied moveset would had been appreciated.

>>342583878
Dark Souls isn't about cheesing bosses. Dark Souls is more about technique over tactics. Let's compare the Flamelurker to the Capra Demon. Flamefucker; Fast, explosions, damage is significantly firebased. You know what would really rustle his jimmies? Water Veil, Ring of Flame Protection, and fire-resistant clothes. The beauty of this is, it's completely foreshadowed. You're in the fiery depths of the fire level where the floor was lava moments before. You better have come prepared to defend against fire. Now, the Capra Demon is a whole different story. What do you got to do? Avoid getting stunlocked, kill the dogs first, then beat the Capra Demon. Throwing on poise will help, maybe, if you can handle the fatroll or midroll with it, but generally the only foreshadowing of the Capra Demon you get are the dogs before him and a line from a merchant you may or may not have actually talked to.

Demon's Souls is Megaman: Flamefucker is Fireman, so you get some bubbles to best deal with this shit. Dark Souls is Castlevania, which is less focused on direct countering and more skill.
>>
>>342584240
It's the least memorable and also imo the easiest boss in the game. It's basically a giant pile of garbage that just stands there and lets you pound on it.
>>
>>342584240
>probably because it looks like shit
Probably because it is way too easy.
The area before that can be an absolute nightmare but I think most people beat the boss first time. So it has no chance to leave a big impression

How come Demon's Souls had boss themes that were quite varied and seemed to match their bosses well while Dark Souls 1/2/3 all had epic gregorian chanting with overly busy orchestral blaring in the background?
>>
>>342584485
Pinwheel isn't surrounded by memorable stuff.
>>
>>342584510
Dark Souls 2 was the biggest offender, 1 was somewhat better than that and 3 had plenty of interesting themes
>>
>>342584510
Because Sakuraba sucks. The only memorable things from DaS1 were Ornstein and Smough and Gwyn.

Dark Souls 2 and 3 did a lot better in my opinion. Bloodborne overall had the best music though.
>>
>>342584540
I disagree, both the catacombs and the tomb of the giants are very memorable areas.
>>
>>342584485
I think it's more that Dirty Colossus is sandwiched between areas that are way more memorable than it. The fact that it's so easy means you won't spend much time on it, so you move from the misery of 5-2 straight to the heartbreak of 5-3 and the Dirty Colossus just gets kinda lost in the middle. If the fight was hard enough that you had to spend several tries on it, you'd probably remember it more, but as it is you just don't spend enough time there to make it stick out compared to what's immediately surrounding it.

The fact that it's literally a giant pile of garbage probably doesn't help though.
>>
>>342584603

No you aren't silly, I've been listening to it on repeat for the past hour. It's funny though, you either hear people praising it or saying it sounds like something coming out of a Casio keyboard. I'm somewhere in between, those trumpets give the game a quirky yet also kind of unsettling, otherworldly feel. The use of horns and drums really nails that medieval aesthetic, it's a shame they drifted away from that but at the same time I like that it's something that's unique to Demon's Souls.

Normally whenever I say that DeS has the best boss themes for these reasons, thematically representative of their bosses and varied, I get several replies with embeds of the Nameless King's theme to self-evidently illustrate how wrong I am.

Dirty Colossus is my favourite theme in the series. It's mechanically very simple, but it represents the colossus perfectly.

Every fucking boss theme in DaS are amazing, unique and convey the setting or background of the boss perfectly. It is also fully orchestrated.

In DaS 3 the two boss musics that stood up were irythil, nameless king and the lord of cinder, mainly because it was gwyn's theme 2.0

DaS 2 music was even more generic, but DaS2 sucks in every aspect.

Not him, but I too can only remember Gwyn and O+S.
The problem is that it's fully orchestrated, it causes everything to sound similar. In Dark Souls, whether a boss is man, beast, or god, before the fight begins he walks up to the same orchestra and starts handing out the sheets with his music score.

In DeS, bosses themes all had a very different sound which was more representative of the boss.

Compare Dirty Colossus with Fool's Idol, Adjudicator or Old King Allant. They're all very different creatures and their music better represents that, I feel.

>I can't understand how having an orchestra is a bad thing.
Part of it can sometimes be the composer. When handed a full orchestra, many composers will often try to create something as grandiose and complex as they possibly can, which doesn't usually fit a video game, especially not a boss theme. Games usually benefit most from simpler, catchy songs with distinct melodies and you almost always lose that when try to make some grand symphony. Part of it can also be the recording too. Recording a whole orchestra playing at once can lose some of the distinction of each individual instrument and hurt the piece as a result, which doesn't happen (or at least is much easier to avoid) with synthesized music. It's why the newly recorded soundtracks in a lot of HD remasters wind up being less popular than the original synthetic versions.

Both of those issues are things that can be avoided but it's definitely been a trend in recent years.
