Hey, I am thinking about getting DiRT Rally on the steam store. I started seeing some gameplay of it and it looks really fun, except I'm worried about being able to play it. I don't have a wheel and am wondering if it's playable with a gamepad. I am completely new to racing/rally games. Help me out /v/, should I go for it and get the game?

if you're a complete baby when it comes to racing games, dont start with racing simulators. there's a very steep learning curve, you're traying to drive a car as fast as it can on a surface that doesnt have a lot of grip.
It's very hard and to get used to and it will take a few afternoons of banging your head on the same brick wall to finally find the fun, if you have some extra moni, get dirt 3 GOTY and use that as a stepping stone to get into the rally racer genre.
Speaking from experience as a 360 pad user and someone with 200+ hours in this game, there is fun to be had you just have to put the work in to be able to drive the cars at a competitive pace. And when you start winning races and championships, and watching your daily/weekly average slowly climb into top tier, it'll be the best feeling of satisfaction you've had.

I'll be here for a bit more before i got to bed feel free to ask me anything.
>>
Get a g27 when they go on sale for $200.
It's still really fun with a controller, but you won't be breaking any records, especially against people who use VR
>>
>>342553742
Right now, DiRT Rallyis $35.99, so instead I should get DiRT 3? That's only around $6. And you're saying that DiRT and it's series are playable with gamepads? Like you don't need a wheel?
>>
>>342554117
I'll keep an eye on it. Thank you for a model, I didn't know which ones are good.

>Right now, DiRT Rallyis $35.99, so instead I should get DiRT 3

if possible get both, play dirt 3 first to get a feel for how rally games work.
Jumping straight into Dirt rally without playing racing games or racing sims is like jumping in to the deep end with bricks tied to your feet.

>And you're saying that DiRT and it's series are playable with gamepads?
Yes, this is one of my results in a daily event(everyone gets the same car with the same tuning and runs it in the same track), it's possible, just be ready to put the work in, knowing the limits of the cars and how they handle on the surface you're driving in, is 60% of the battle.

> Like you don't need a wheel?

I helps, but it's possible to have fun with a gamepad, just be ready to have to put more hours in to have the same level of control as wheel user.

I looked up the g27 and barely found anything. I think it got discontinued. Do you have any good wheels you recommend?
>>
>>342555223
I use a 360 pad, but a friend of mine got a g25 for 100€. He let me try and it was nice, dont know how different they are, but look up G25s see if you find any good deals.
>>
i bought dirt 3 when it was on sale a week or so ago and I play it every day now with all the assit shit turned off.

I don't really play much racing games either. Also i use a controller if that helps.
>>
>>342555359
How much different is DiRT 3 from DiRT Rally?
>>
>>342552964
Basically what the other guy says is all good. I would recommend Dirt 2 over Dirt 3 if it was still available but you have to pirate it to even play it now. I have a G25 and it's great for hardcore racing games but most Codemasters games work great with a gamepad. I would also recommend Flatout 1 and 2.
>>
Does anyone know anything about DiRT: Showdown?
>>
>>342554243
not that guy but g27s are a pretty good value imo, its honestly a shit ton more fun than playing with a controller

Dirt 3 has an arcady handling, wide roads and short tracks and flashbacks. The kind of game where anyone can pick up, play and do good.
Dirt Rally has arguably the most realistic driving model to date accurate roads (barely wide enough to fit the car at times) with accurate grip levels for the surface you're driving on, the tracks are all 4k+ (except the rallycross tracks) no flashbacks. If you want to win you need to focus on what you're doing and you need to do it fast, even on casual difficulty especially if you haven't played a rally game the ai is fast.

Basically it's like looking at a picture of the mona lisa and being in a museum face to face with the real thing. Rally captures the endurance part of rallying much better, there will be event where you'll barely make it to the finish and just making it to the end is a victory in of itself.

>>342556232
just get flatout 2 or next car game if you want a demolition derby game.
>>
>>342556232
I have it. There's not much to it other than pretty graphics. It seems like a discount game compared to other Codemasters titles.

Or like >>342556531 >>342555685 said, get Flatout.

It's a good game, one of the best rally games I've played, but be warned it can be brutally difficult.
>>
>>342556531
Why shouldn't he start with dirt 1/2? Still easy enough without (most) of the dudebro Ken Block faggotry.

havent played dirt 1, dirt 2 was very spread out as a rally game.
Dont get me wrong, dirt 2 is fun and vaired. But as a rally game, the actually rally part of it is like 20% of the total game.
>>
>>342556853
Can you even buy those anymore?

Another good non-sim rally game was Rallisport Challenge.
>>
>>342556735
I mean compared to the other games. Like >>342556531 said, is it a demo game or is that just a part of it?
>>
>>342557126
There just isn't as much to it as the other ones. It feels like it was purposely dumbed down, simplified and had fewer options, courses etc. I got bored of it way faster than I did the other games.
>>
A 360 controller works fine for Dirt Rally. I'd highly recommend it its a great game. If you are new don't worry there are infinite customization options for driving assists.

does the 360 controller have analog triggers? as in, is it NOT (floor the gas/nothing)?
>>
>>342558051
the 360's triggers are analog

as are the ps4, xbone and i think ps3 controllers for anyone out there thinking about the same thing
>>
>>342557073
Dirt 1 was very good. It did have some rallycross stuff, but was more focused on rally than dirt 2/3.

>>342557098
I didn't even notice those two weren't on steam anymore, I still have old hard copys.

If you have access to them, i wouldn't ignore Dirt 1/2. Good games that are very newbie/controller friendly.
>>
>>342558051
Yes. I usually use the right stick for gas/brake when a game supports it though.
>>
>>342558051
yes, you have some fine control with the 360 controler. Mine is old as fuck and beat to shit so i have to set up a 20% deadzone because it floats, still get some fast time with it.
