1, even with DSfix, is clunky as shit compared to 3. For me, at least, trying out 1 again was like going to China to get some fresh air.
2 is its own monster compared to both of them, though. If 3 was actually supposed to expand on 1, 2 controls like a different game entirely.

Oh yes, spawning and immediately getting gangbanged before your animation finishes is extremely enjoyable PVP, along with constantly running into hosts that have 2 phantoms with them because they decided to prioritize invasions to people with phantoms, having half your estus and 1/4 of your health gone by default along with having even less estus because you need to restore mana is fun and engaging, having estus instantly heal making it impossible to punish sips is a great mechanic as well, having no build variety other than quality adds great replay-ability too, and lastly removing any sort of interesting covenants and making the pvp based ones not even work is just the icing on the cake.

The UM version of 2002 isn't on fightcade and features a bunch of new characters, rebalanced gameplay and a remastered soundtrack. I also find it easier to get friends in via steam when they're just starting out and have created several KOF fans by getting them into 2002UM. Same goes for 98.
