Valve's gone in the opposite direction though, with Steam Machines, SteamOS, and Steam Controllers flopping pretty hard and not communicating with their fans. They say that they don't advertise because a good product sells itself. Well, apparently none of their products were very good.
I honestly think if Valve put out a letter in 2013 or so saying "We were going to make Half Life 3 but we've decided against it because nobody here wants to work on it", everybody would have stopped bitching at them.
